Section Paloise landed the punch that will loop on highlight reels all season – a Rodrigo Marta double inside three minutes that flipped the feel of the afternoon – but the more telling story was how Lyon steadied, reset their tempo and then walked away with the contest. Once the scramble settled, Lyon’s returning heartbeat and deeper strike power turned an edgy arm-wrestle into a rout.
This was the week’s true barometer between two unbeaten sides. Lyon arrived with 88 points already banked this season and, crucially, Baptiste Couilloud back in the 23. Pau had swagger from Montpellier and a 70-burger at home. Marta’s ingenuity briefly made it their kind of game – chaotic, broken-field, nervy – but Lyon’s response was calm and ruthless. The margin was big because the rugby was, not because the scoreline lied.
Why did it swing Lyon’s way? Tempo and decision-making at nine and ten for a start. Martin Meliande directed the early traffic, parked the lead with two penalties, and after the break Couilloud’s injection off the bench sharpened the ruck speed and exit accuracy. With front-foot ball, Lyon’s strike runners did the rest. Jiuta Wainiqolo picked the seam that always seemed to be there, Sam Simmonds won the gain line on repeat and finished one himself, and Iosefo Masi split Pau before half-time to tilt momentum back home. Out wide, Gabin Lorre atoned for his first-half slip with a late finish and a pile of involvements through the backfield. When Lyon accelerated, Pau couldn’t live with the rhythm.
Underpinning it was contact accuracy and discipline. Lyon turned Pau over six times, coughed up only three themselves, and beat twice as many defenders. Pau missed 32 tackles and bled 14 turnovers. Possession was near even, Pau’s lineout was spotless, yet they repeatedly handed the ball back or lost collisions after first contact. That’s not system, that’s execution under heat.

The spectacle arrived early and from nothing. Already 10–0 down after Lyon’s fast start, Marta took a restart with a deft left boot to keep it alive, then nicked a second moments later after Lorre lost his footing in-goal. It rattled Lyon and gave Pau belief; indeed they eked a 13–10 lead from that surge before Masi hit back and sent Lyon in seven up. That exchange said plenty about both teams: Pau can conjure from scraps, Lyon can absorb a swing and still reassert shape.
The decisive phase actually came just after the interval. Pau got level through a hard-earned Hugo Auradou try – fitting reward for his 20-tackle shift – but Wainiqolo’s immediate reply was the tell: same pattern speed, same strike line, different class of finish. Then the hinge: Baptiste Pesenti saw red on 51 minutes with Lyon five in front. Against 14, Simmonds punched through from close range to reopen daylight, and though Youri Delhommel nicked one back, Lyon closed with authority. Camille Chat crashed over, and when Léo Berdeu came on to steer the last ten, Lorre and Adrien Séguret iced it. Even a late yellow for Dylan Cretin couldn’t tilt the flow by then.
Individuals mattered. Wainiqolo’s 100-plus metres and timing on kick-returns bent Pau’s backfield. Simmonds’ 19 carries were the platform, with Mickaël Guillard and Antoine Deliance tidying up the ruck mess and making their tackles. Couilloud’s return wasn’t flashy, but the tempo bump and control on exits changed the feel of the second half. For Pau, Marta was electric and opportunistic, Théo Attissogbé countered bravely, Facundo Isa carried like a man hauling a side upfield on his own, and Auradou never stopped chopping. The spine was willing; the accuracy around it wasn’t.
Does 51–25 flatter Lyon? Not really. The red card widened the gap, but Lyon had already restored command through shape and speed, and they kept their foot down. There are caveats: that soft re-entry at 10–0, and a 64% lineout that will be a target for better packs. But with Couilloud back and the back three humming, Lyon look built to score in bunches. The work-on is focus after scoring and cleaner set-piece ball.
Pau leave Gerland with a lesson. They have enough strike to flip a game, and their lineout is a weapon, but you cannot gift a side this sharp 14 turnovers, 32 misses and a red and expect to stay in it away from home. Tighten the contact, tidy the breakdown decisions, and keep 15 on the park, and that early-season form will hold. The ceiling is there; Saturday showed the cost when the floor gives way.
