Rodolfo Ambrosio has left his role as Uruguay head coach, 14 months out from the Rugby World Cup
Uruguay have sacked head coach Rodolfo Ambrosio and assistant coach Juan Figallo, 14 months out from the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
The decision comes following a disappointing Nations Cup campaign, in which Los Teros finished bottom of the Americas pool. In that period, they also tasted defeat to Georgia and Hong Kong China, which sandwiched a draw with Romania.
Boss Ambrosio was named Uruguay head coach back in 2024, and guided them to their fourth consecutive Rugby World Cup qualification after an aggregate win over Chile to win the Sudaméricano 2025 final. He also previously held a role as Brazil head coach.
Former Argentina international Figallo also joined the coaching ticket in 2024, after leaving his post at Saracens, where he worked as Women’s head coach. The former Saracen also had a coaching stint with CHAMP outfit Ampthill.
In a statement, the Uruguayan Rugby Union (URU) said: “The Uruguayan Rugby Union has decided in recent hours to end the tenure of Los Teros coaches Rodolfo Ambrosio and Juan Figallo.

“This decision was made after careful consideration, with the aim of ensuring that the entire Uruguayan rugby community enthusiastically embraces a new strategic plan for all the teams representing the Uruguayan Rugby Union.
“We will continue working diligently, committed to the growth of Uruguayan rugby.”
Their exits also leave Uruguay in a state of uncertainty ahead of the World Cup next year, with Los Teros drawn into pool D.
Uruguay kick off their Rugby World Cup campaign on Monday, 4 October 2027 against Scotland, before later facing Portugal in round two of the pool stages on Monday, 11 October 2027.
Los Teros then take on Ireland on Sunday, 17 October to round off the opening stage.
