Joe Schmidt has resisted calls to overhaul his starting side, instead prioritising continuity as the Wallabies squad for the second Test against the British & Irish Lions is revealed.
Schmidt has made minimal changes to the side that went down 27–19 in Brisbane, with just four alterations, three of them to the starting lineup. The Wallabies will persist with the same starting backline, giving Tom Lynagh another opportunity at flyhalf. Most of the adjustments have been made to bolster the forward pack with added muscle and experience.
Headlining the changes is reigning John Eales Medallist and powerhouse backrower Rob Valetini, who has recovered from a calf injury.
“He's just happy to be back,” said Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt.
“He trained really well today. We're happy to have him back. I did think that Nick Champion de Crespigny played incredibly well in that furnace last week making his Test debut, but the experience that Bobby brings—he probably brings confidence to other players. Just his ability to take the ball forward.”
Also earning his first start in the series is Will Skelton, who was held back for the first Test as he recovered from a series of frustrating injury setbacks.
These two experienced forwards will add a significant boost to a pack that struggled to dent the Lions’ relentless defence in the series opener.
“We know what Bobby and Will bring—just that calmness, their leadership, and also their experience,” said prop Angus Bell.
“They're great people to have in your team, and obviously they've got a big job to do this weekend. We're all really excited.”
Skelton's inclusion in particular is expected to shore up the Wallabies’ maul and scrum.
“He's very important to us—both in the scrummaging arena and in the maul,” Bell added. “He’s obviously huge and strong. Being with La Rochelle for so long and with the Wallabies, the experience he has around mauls and what to do in those areas is really valuable for us.”
Another key inclusion is hooker Dave Porecki, who returns from a long stint on the sidelines recovering from concussion. Known for his accuracy at the lineout and effectiveness in rush defence, Porecki adds a different dynamic to the forward pack.
The Wallabies have also opted for a 6–2 bench split, anticipating heavy rain in Melbourne on Saturday. Langi Gleeson joins the matchday squad alongside backs Tate McDermott and Ben Donaldson.
