Castres squeeze the middle, Vannes learn the Top 14 lesson
This told us that Castres are already in season mode and that Vannes, back at the top table, can’t afford a 10-minute lapse against a side that lives on pressure. The game’s hinge was obvious: Santiago Medrano’s yellow flipped tension into control, Castres banked a penalty try straight away, and the contest moved onto home terms — territory, exits, and cold-eyed conversion in the 22.
From there, Louis Le Brun did what good 10s do in Round 1. He nudged Castres around the park and kept the board ticking, while the men in blue cashed in when they were close. Jack Goodhue picked the seam before the break, Teddy Durand buried Vannes’ interval reset straight after it, and the hosts had the kind of scoreboard that changes how you defend. By the hour, Florent Vanverberghe punched over to 29-6 and the job looked done.

The shift at 3-3 was decisive because it reshaped both mentality and geography. With a man down, Vannes lost their grip on field position, and Castres squeezed — kick to the corners, win the race to the gain line, accumulate. Louis Le Brun was central: first points on three minutes, two calm conversions when the game asked for clarity, and, more importantly, the kind of kicking that let his forwards play in the right postcode for 20 straight minutes. Castres ended up leading for 74 minutes; that wasn’t an accident.

Castres’ edge was starkest where it matters. They averaged 3.6 points per red-zone entry to Vannes’ 2.0, and that difference is your scoreboard. Goodhue’s finish was the statement moment — hard, straight, and timed — but the platform came from the breakdown. The hosts won nine turnovers to one, with Baptiste Delaporte and Kyllian Ringuet relentless over the ball and Hamish Watson punching out of contact to keep phases on the front foot. When the game became about recycling in the right places, Castres looked comfortable.
There was balance to the picture. Vannes’ set piece was clean — 100% at both scrum and lineout — so this wasn’t about being bullied at source. It was about what happened after the first win. Too often their multi-phase shape stalled on the Castres 10–15 metre line, with support a beat slow for the jackal or the carry too upright to dent a well-set fringe. That’s Top 14 ruthlessness: you can own the throw and still lose the moment.
Discipline bit them at the worst time. Santiago Medrano’s yellow at 30 minutes preceded the penalty try that cracked open the arm wrestle, and Vannes never fully recovered. Maxime Lafage kept them in range off the tee, then converted both of the late tries, but the visitors needed that accuracy much earlier. Ten entries for roughly 20 points away at Pierre-Fabre won’t cut it. The flip side is encouraging: they created enough visits to ask questions, and the bench injected life.
Their surge was real. Ben Stevenson changed the feel of the last quarter with a sharp finish on 63 minutes, and Mills Sanerivi forced his way over soon after as the forwards finally turned pressure into points. Vannes won the closing stanza 14-0 and forced Castres into a scramble or two; that’s both a credit to their fight and a note in the Castres review.
Because Castres did switch off. The last 20 lost them the bonus they were chasing and exposed a softness in exit and discipline once the bench rolled. They also won only 60% of their own scrums, which didn’t cost them here but won’t be ignored in Monday’s meeting. Still, when the game required clarity, they had it. Durand’s strike just after the break was a dagger, Vanverberghe’s close-range finish reflected their composure in the red zone, and Le Brun’s management knitted it together.
What does it mean? For Castres, confirmation that a sharp pre-season has carried over. Their 22 efficiency and breakdown work are already at league standard; tidy the close and the scrum and they’ll bank plenty at home. For Vannes, this was a clear read on the step up. They can make ground and they can maul clean ball, but Top 14 points come from speed to support, decision-making inside the 22, and staying 15 on 15 when the game is in the balance. The late rally shows they belong; the middle hour shows what they must fix to win these games rather than trim them late.
