Chile see off ill-disciplined Hong Kong to make it two from two
Chile made it two wins from two in the World Rugby Nations Cup with a 38-17 victory over Hong Kong at Estadio Sausalito, a result that lifts them top of Pool B and leaves Hong Kong bottom of Pool A without a point after a second defeat.
The scoreline was deserved, and the main thread running through the afternoon was Hong Kong’s discipline. Four yellow cards, one red and 19 penalties conceded left the visitors playing too much of the match under pressure and too often short-handed to sustain a challenge.
How the match unfolded
Hong Kong’s problems started early. Lachlan Doheny was shown a yellow card in the eighth minute, and from the resulting pressure Chile were awarded a penalty try to lead 7-0. Paul Altier pulled three points back with a penalty on 11 minutes, but the hosts responded when tighthead Inaki Gurruchaga forced his way over on 14 minutes for 12-3.
To their credit, Hong Kong stayed in it. A yellow card for Zac Cinnamond on 24 minutes added to their problems, but they still found a way back. Alexander Post scored on 32 minutes and, after Doheny was sent off in the 34th minute, scrum-half Jack Combes darted over on 38 minutes. Altier converted both tries to bring the visitors back within two points.
Chile, though, had already landed an important blow before the break. Raimundo Martinez crossed on 35 minutes and Santiago Videla converted, which sent the hosts into half-time 19-17 in front.
The second half slips away from Hong Kong
With Hong Kong down to 14 men for the remainder, the game tilted decisively after the interval. Marcelo Torrealba, who had come on before half-time, scored on 47 minutes and Videla’s conversion stretched Chile’s lead to 26-17.
From there the penalty count and the cards kept telling. James Sawyer was binned on 60 minutes, and Chile made the extra space count almost immediately as Martinez grabbed his second on 61 minutes, again converted by Videla. A fourth Hong Kong yellow, this time for Harry Sayers on 64 minutes, summed up the visitors’ inability to stay on the right side of referee Craig Evans.
Nicolas Saab rounded things off with a 76th-minute try to seal a 38-17 win.
Standout performers
- Raimundo Martinez was at the heart of Chile’s best work, finishing with two tries, 11 carries and 12 tackles from number eight.
- Santiago Videla added three conversions from inside centre and finished with eight tackles.
- Manuel Bustamante was Chile’s most dangerous carrier, making 63 metres from eight carries and beating five defenders.
Plenty for Hong Kong to fix
This was a bruising afternoon for Hong Kong, and much of it was self-inflicted. Conceding 19 penalties and collecting five cards, including one red, is too much against any side at this level.
There were still individuals who kept working. Number eight Joshua Hrstich led the carry count with 15 for 40 metres and added 11 tackles. Paul Altier was lively from full-back with 47 metres, two clean breaks and seven points, while Pierce MacKinlay-West and Alexander Post contributed in the loose.
The wider numbers show Hong Kong were competitive in parts. They made 99 tackles and were close enough on carries, but the cards made the task too big. Two defeats, no points and a points difference of -68 after two rounds leaves them with work to do.
What it means next
Chile top Pool B with two wins and 10 points, and next face Georgia. Hong Kong, still searching for a first point, take on Uruguay next.
