Provence dig in with 14 to win again at Bendichou — but this one says as much about Colomiers
What this actually told us: Provence Rugby can win ugly on the road, even with a card hanging over them, and Colomiers don’t yet know how to turn front-foot ball into points. The visitors spent an hour down a tighthead after a red, missed a chunk of tackles, and still closed the game out. Colomiers made more breaks and beat more defenders yet coughed up 17 turnovers and butchered their lineout. That’s why it finished the way it did.
There was nothing fluky about Provence’s edge. They were smarter at the breakdown, pinched eight turnovers, and nudged the scoreboard at the right times. Joris Cazenave’s two penalties just after the half turned a knife; from 8–12 to 8–18 in five minutes forced Colomiers off script. From there, with a cushion and their kick pressure working, Provence managed the tramlines and dared Colomiers to win it with structure. Colomiers couldn’t.

The match swung less on momentum and more on what each side could trust. Provence trusted their defence to scramble and their nine to bank points. Colomiers couldn’t trust their lineout. At 52% (12 from 23), it killed them — 11 throws gone is a pile of platforms burned. They also left four conversion points out there; two unconverted tries in a five-point loss isn’t a footnote. It’s the headline in the coaching review.
The contest was defined by three punches. First, the red card to Hugo Ndiaye on 20 minutes should have put Provence on the back foot, but they doubled down on collision work and were rewarded when Adrien Lapegue-Lafaye and then Setareki Bituniyata found space before the break. Bituniyata’s finish was a gut check for Colomiers: a centre stepping through traffic with support lines alive around him. Colomiers did answer through Alberto Carmona right on half-time to keep it in reach. Second, the Cazenave penalties on 49 and 54 minutes — both earned from messy exits and ruck indiscipline — created a two-score gap that altered the risk profile. Third, even after Gregoire Bazin surged in to cut it to five, Caleb Muntz saw yellow on 69 minutes and Colomiers still couldn’t sniff the line. That last 10 told you plenty about Provence’s composure and Colomiers’ craft in the red zone.
This wasn’t a set-piece mugging. Provence’s scrum held at 8/9 while a man down in the tight five; that alone is credit to the Rodda-Zafra engine room and the bench reshuffle. The visitors also shaded possession 52–48, not what you’d expect for 60 minutes with 14. But the defensive output made the difference: 116 tackles with 34 misses is ragged, yes, yet the scramble covered and the jackals landed. That’s scoreboard defence. Colomiers, by contrast, carved six clean breaks and beat 36 defenders — numbers that normally win you a home game. Then check the other column: 17 turnovers conceded. They forced the door open and then dropped the handle.

Individually, Provence got match-winning moments from key backs. Bituniyata was decisive, 65 metres off 10 carries and the try that flipped the energy before the interval. Lapegue-Lafaye finished well. Manuel Vareiro was tidy in the backfield and added the only conversion of the night. And Joris Cazenave did the boring, valuable stuff: tempo when it was needed, two penalties when it really was. Up front, Izack Rodda and Andres Zafra worked hard through 21 combined tackles, keeping the maul honest and the contact contest live enough to win those ruck decisions.
For Colomiers, the raw material is there. Jules Danglot was sharp on the carry, nine darts for 78 metres and seven defenders beaten — that’s line speed respect in any league. Richard Hardwick carried 14 times for 72 metres and repeatedly gave them gainline wins. Simao Bento threatened from deep. Bazin punched in a fine finish and racked up 82 metres off the flank. But the polish isn’t. Thibault Debaes steered territory and took his penalty, yet the attack didn’t cash in when Provence bent; the support lines were a beat late, the breakdown seal vulnerable, and the calling in the 22 too lateral once the maul platform abandoned them. Hookers Théo Lachaud and Thomas Larrieu split the throwing, but between them the returns were the story — 12 wins, 11 losses — and you can’t build a win on that.
Context matters at Bendichou. Provence won a semi here in May and, for the fourth meeting on the spin, left with the points. There’s a pattern: Colomiers play the prettier phase stuff; Provence own the decisive passages.
So, does the margin flatter anyone? Not really. Provence earned five points’ worth of control through game management and discipline at the breakdown, and they survived their own indiscipline on the card front. Colomiers had more than enough ball to win it by seven to ten, but their set piece and accuracy put a ceiling on their night. A one-score game fits that picture.
Takeaways are clear. Provence sit top of the early table and will be happy they backed up round one with a very different type of victory. Work-ons are obvious too: 34 missed tackles and two cards away from home will lose you matches against sharper sides. For Colomiers, the tape is brutally simple: fix the lineout, tidy the cleanout, and keep the composure to turn pressure into three or seven. The shape and strike threats are there; until the nuts and bolts are, they’ll keep coming second in matches they should be controlling.
