Where did it turn back? Around discipline and decision-making. Bristol had closed to three points and were asking questions, then Harry Randall saw yellow. The visitors’ bench had added bite — Randall’s energy typically quickens their breakdown, and AJ MacGinty had kept score throughout — but the card drained the tempo just as they needed to squeeze Exeter’s exit. The Chiefs, who had already brought on fresh tightheads and a new hooker to tidy the set piece, took that breather and finished the job with a late strike. Does 45-28 flatter Exeter? Yes. The gap was three, late, and Bristol had a weapon Exeter struggled to answer. But the Chiefs earned the right to ride out that wobble by being ruthless when Bristol were disjointed. Efficient red-zone conversion early, smart exits when the Bears threatened in phase play, and enough bench impact to close — that’s a decent Cup template for a club still stung by last season’s final in this competition.
What do we learn? Exeter’s backfield cohesion and finishing look ahead of schedule, and they’ve got a number eight in James who can keep them on the front foot when the game slows. But their maul defence is vulnerable, and better sides will lean on it until it’s fixed. Bristol, meanwhile, come away knowing they can move anyone when they get their lineout right, and that they can climb back into games quickly. The homework is obvious: tidy the connections on the edge, start better away from home, and keep your nerve when the chase is on.
