This was a reminder that Gloucester treat the Premiership Rugby Cup differently at Kingsholm. Tempo on tap, clarity in the red zone, and a knack for turning five minutes of field position into a pair of tries. Against a rotated Sale Sharks side, that Cup muscle memory showed. The hosts didn’t need long passages of dominance; they just needed the right patches. They found them either side of half-time and the game broke open.
Sale’s selection was a bet on squad depth and it never quite settled in the contact and at exit. They had moments – enough to make it a live contest after the break – but under heat their discipline and defensive spacing frayed, and Gloucester were ruthless. That’s the difference: Gloucester looked like a team that’s spent the last few seasons using this competition to free their attack; Sale looked like a side learning on the job.
The key swing came in the seven minutes straddling the interval. At 26–14, Sale were in the fight after scrapping back from 19–0 down, but Ponipati Loganimasi’s yellow on 37 minutes handed Gloucester a soft-shouldered edge. Seb Blake walked away with his second try on 40 minutes – the sort of maul finish that comes from calm, accurate detail – and with Charlie Atkinson adding the extras, the half closed at 33–14. Two minutes into the second period, Max Knight struck through the middle and 38–14 was a chasm. That was the match in miniature: Sale errors, Gloucester immediacy.
The hosts didn’t have to be perfect. They left kicks out there and leaked two tries just after the hour mark. But they were consistently on the front foot when it mattered. Atkinson’s first-half control gave Gloucester field position and width; the nine–ten link kept the tempo high and the crowd in the game. Out wide, Will Joseph’s hard line for his try and Ollie Thorley’s finish showcased the edges Gloucester found once Sale’s fold slowed. And the spine of the pack – Blake on the money at the lineout, with the tight five rolling their maul on cue – did the Cup job Kingsholm expects.
That early 19–0 burst told you plenty about Sale’s day. The Sharks’ defensive connection on the edges was short of Premiership pace and their exits fed Gloucester repeat entries. You can blood a young tighthead or a new ten, but not both facets misfiring at Kingsholm. When Sale did settle, there was encouragement: Alfie Longstaff and Dom Hanson cashed in around the ruck after patient carries, Nathan Jibulu made impact off the bench, and Tom O’Flaherty finished cleanly to trim it to 38–26 on 53 minutes. That rally came with quicker ball and better kicking length from Ollie Davies, who struck three conversions. But they never regained the territorial handle they needed to make 20 minutes of pressure count.
Credit Gloucester for cutting off that Sale surge efficiently. Game management tightened, the bench forwards reloaded the set piece, and the next score was theirs: Will Trenholm finishing in close to push it out of reach. From there it was composure. The only late note was a Bevan Rodd yellow at the death, a footnote that summed up Sale’s discipline under stress more than it changed anything.

Individually, Blake was excellent beyond the scoreboard; his throw-catch rhythm underpinned the red-zone return. Atkinson owned the first-half map, and Joseph’s timing in the tramlines kept Sale honest. Behind them, Lewis Ludlow and Jack Clement did unfussy work off the ball that stopped Sale ever stringing phases on front-foot ball in the middle third. For the Sharks, Davies grew into it and will be better for this, Louw and Lozowski offered a couple of tidy touches in traffic, and O’Flaherty, predictably, looked the most likely whenever he had daylight.
Does the margin flatter Gloucester? Not really. Seven tries to four with three conversions left begging suggests they could have been further clear. The wobble after 50 minutes will irritate George Skivington: two defensive lapses and a soft kick return fed Sale cheap momentum. But the larger pattern matched what we’ve seen before in this competition – Gloucester’s ability to turn one mistake into seven points, then double it before you’ve reset.
Sale leave with a reality check rather than a crisis. Rotations are useful until they collide with a home side that knows exactly how to squeeze Cup minutes. The Sharks saw enough from their young spine to justify the selection, but the set-piece accuracy and penalty count have to harden up if they’re serious about the pool. Leaders need to slow games that are running away; this one ran right past them either side of the sheds.
For Gloucester, this plugs them straight back into their Cup identity: high tempo at Kingsholm, maul as a weapon, and finishers across the backline. The work-on is clear – tighter defensive sequencing after changes – but the take-home is stronger: when they own territory in this competition, they don’t just score; they score in clusters. For Sale, the takeaway is equally simple. Depth is promising, but Cup nights in Gloucester are no place to learn how to manage pressure. They’ll need their next selection to blend that youth with a bit more steel around the set piece and the exits, or the pool will get away from them.
