This fixture said more about where Newcastle Red Bulls might be heading than it did about the state of Leicester Tigers. Four months after shipping 62 at the same ground, Newcastle came back to Welford Road and won with something like authority. The Cup holders are 0–2 and searching; Newcastle, whose 2025–26 veered from the ridiculous to the sublime, found a degree of control away from Kingston Park. That’s the headline.
The detail behind it is thin for now. Official reporting hasn’t yet filled in the beats of how Newcastle got to 36 or exactly when Leicester’s chase gathered shape, and the match data on the public feed is incomplete. What we can say is this: Newcastle led 11–0 at half-time, were comfortable enough on the hour that a late brace from Charlie Bemand only trimmed the margin, and had an early strike from Harrison Obatoyinbo to lean on. That profile — start fast, stay in front, leak late — matches what we know of them.
There’s a selection story here as well. Leicester’s half-back axis didn’t last. Orlando Bailey was replaced at the break, and Ollie Allan followed him off soon after; Jamie Blamire arrived at hooker on 44 minutes, and tighthead cover was needed before the interval. You don’t tear up your 2, 9 and 10 that early unless the attack is sticky and the set piece is creaking, or you’ve copped injuries. Either way, it points to a muddled first 40 from the champions, who were already chasing by the time they found a foothold.
Newcastle’s spine looked settled by contrast. Brett Connon had the posts talking — the feed shows three conversions — and when the Red Bulls have a fly-half knitting phases and banking points, their back three tend to cash in. With Christian Wade and Werner Kok flanking Obatoyinbo, the intent to stress the edges was obvious from the teamsheet alone. One of the verified moments supports it: Obatoyinbo scoring inside the first quarter. The rest of the scoring pattern is still to be confirmed, but an 11-point half-time lead away to Leicester typically means clean exits, decent kick pressure and enough breakdown accuracy to stop maul territory piling up against you.
Was the 12-point margin fair? If anything, it flatters Leicester. Bemand’s two late finishes reduced the damage after the game had already tilted. The sense is Newcastle did the bulk of their work in the middle third and then eased off; good teams close those minutes out with the same sharpness they start with. That drop-off is Newcastle’s biggest work-on from what we can verify: they let a beaten opponent put gloss on the score. The Cup will punish that against stronger benches.
For Leicester, the more worrying part isn’t the scoreboard, it’s the lack of cohesion. The early hook at fly-half and a change at nine, with Joseph Woodward carrying the kicking duties at one point, tell you the shapes weren’t landing and the red-zone execution was off. When Tigers are functioning, they control field position through the set piece and squeeze penalties out of the contact zone; none of the fragmentary data hints at that kind of squeeze, and the half-time deficit confirms they didn’t build any scoreboard pressure before the interval.
Newcastle’s pack deserves a nod for that. Names like George McGuigan, Tom Christie and Sam Graham don’t shout romance, they shout reliability, and this looked like a job built on their kind of graft: tidy lineout ball, solid defensive spacing, enough collisions won to give Connon front-foot phases. Again, we’re waiting on full numbers to prove it, but the pattern fits the people.
Individuals mattered. Bemand’s impact off the Leicester bench rescued respectability, and he’ll have forced a selection conversation. Obatoyinbo’s early finish is the kind of action Newcastle have lacked at Welford Road in recent meetings — take the half-chance rather than waiting for a perfect platform. Connon’s stewardship, meanwhile, is the quiet difference between the version of Newcastle that nicked Sale 45–42 last spring and the one that got hammered at Bath. When the 10 is decisive, the rest of their game settles.
Context sharpens this. Leicester came into the campaign with the Cup in their cabinet and the target on their backs, then lost at Quins in Round 1 and now this. Early days or not, two defeats with heavy in-game surgery suggests the combinations aren’t set and the carrying order isn’t right. They need to lock down a 9–10–12 that can get them moving forward and stop relying on bench energy to chase lost causes.
For Newcastle, the takeaway is simple: this is progress you can point at. Winning at Welford Road so soon after a 62–3 humiliation at the same venue is a psychological hurdle cleared, even if a couple of late concessions underline that they’re still learning how to finish with the hand on the throat. For Leicester, the lesson is nastier: defending a Cup title asks for clarity in shape and tempo from day one. They haven’t found it yet, and the fixture list won’t wait for them to feel their way in.
