This told us more about fragility than flair. Provence Rugby produced long stretches of front-foot ball, scored seven tries and owned the lineout – and still lost. RC Narbonne, under the pump for most of the night, found eight tries off far fewer phases. The visitors’ strike running and offloading game cut deeper than Provence’s possession ever quite did, and a ruthless closing burst turned a match the hosts had twice in their hands.
The shape of it is in the numbers. Provence had the ball, the territory and the platform: 54% possession, 182 carries to 96, a perfect 16/16 lineout. Narbonne were forced to make 221 tackles. Yet the winners led the way in clean breaks and turned broken field into points. When it loosened, the game tilted orange and black.

It looked done early. Provence’s opening quarter was clean, fast and accurate: power to the gain line, tempo off nine, and width when it was on. A rumbling carry from Lino Julien set the tone with a fourth-minute try, Etonia Waqa added another off momentum ball, and Romain Trouilloud slid through for 21–0 by 20 minutes. That should be enough at home. It wasn’t, because Narbonne never stopped punching off scraps. Victor Hannoun and then Daniel Jooste cashed in when Provence’s scramble lost its spacing, keeping the scoreboard attached. Even when Baptiste Lenoir finished on the stroke of the interval, Narbonne refused to go away.
The turn came right after the break. Clément Clavières – Narbonne’s most dangerous outlet all night – struck from depth within two minutes of the restart and then again before the hour, both times off quick touches and support lines that pulled Provence’s edge defenders out of phase. With Tom Chauvet steady off the tee and a 13/14 lineout feeding them, Narbonne were level at 35–35 and suddenly dictating where the chaos happened. Clavières’ 76 metres, two clean breaks and four offloads weren’t padding; they were the lever that moved the game.
Provence still had firepower. Trouilloud was influential – two tries, six conversions, and the right pictures in front of him – and his midfield had teeth. Sireli Masiwini carried for over 100 metres, beat seven defenders and looked the best runner on the pitch; when he hit a hard unders line on 67 minutes to push it to 49–42, the home side should have closed it out. Around him, Waqa’s brace and Tornike Jalagonia’s 21 carries (59 metres) kept them on the front foot. The platform wasn’t the problem; the 16 turnovers and what happened when the ball changed hands were.
Because transition was where Narbonne lived. Their back row, especially Edouard Richer, carried hard and straight – 65 metres off 10 touches – and the midfield linked beautifully. Théo Gomez’s five offloads kept plays alive when first contact looked contained. They didn’t need rucks to be tidy; they needed one mismatch. Defensively, their engine room stuck 45 tackles between them, Morgan Maga’s 25 the pick of it, and the set piece didn’t wilt – 100% at scrum time, 93% on their own throws. That gave them just enough structure to let the rest be opportunism.
The bench mattered. Provence swapped their hooker and tighthead at the break and didn’t lose the lineout, but their closing detail frayed: exits drifted, a couple of carries got isolated, and the tempo they’d set for 70 minutes fell away. Narbonne’s changes had the opposite effect. Replacement hooker Jules Veyrier scored on 75 minutes to level it up again, then in the red Hugo Navizet – already on the board earlier – won the outside shoulder one last time to nick it. Hugo Goyenech added the pressure conversions late; small acts, big swing.
Does 56–49 flatter the visitors? No. Eight tries to seven says not, and they finished the stronger side. But the route they took is hard to bank week on week. Ten penalties conceded and 221 tackles is a lot of time without the ball; better sides will suffocate you there. They’ll be happy with the clean breaks and composure at the death, and they should double down on the offload combinations that keep Clavières, Gomez and Richer in the game.
For Provence, this is a sharp lesson. The attack is humming – lineout accuracy, front-row touches, Trouilloud taking the line, Masiwini a constant threat – but they were too easy to slice when the ball spilled or the kick return wasn’t nailed. You can’t dominate possession and platform and still give up eight tries unless your transition defence and game management are off. Twice they had the scoreboard where they wanted it, at 21–0 and 49–42; twice they let Narbonne back through looseness.
Narbonne leave with belief in their identity: hard defence, clean set piece, and a willingness to play when it’s messy. Provence leave with reminders: protect the ball, tidy the last ten, and fix the scramble. Same platform next time, different outcome – if they learn quickly.
