Provence show their edge: ruthless with little ball, too sharp for Agen
This told us that Provence Rugby can still punish opponents without owning the ball. Less possession, plenty of incision. They didn’t need long sequences to land blows; they needed field position and a clean platform, and they cashed in. After a summer of what-ifs following Toulouse and the final loss to Vannes, the finalists looked like a side coming back to work, not one dwelling on last season.
It also told us that SU Agen can carry and step all night without hurting you if the breakdown and discipline aren’t there. They beat more defenders than the hosts and saw more of the ball, but their 22 visits lacked accuracy and they gave up the key moments. One yellow card, a wobbly scrum, and a tendency to play wide before earning it turned a contest into a hiding.

The hinge was the ten minutes after the hour. Agen finally cracked the line through Charles Laloi to drag it back within two scores, and there was a flicker of jeopardy at 22-10. Provence’s response was decisive: fresh legs, a tight call, and then the kill. Replacement hooker Romain Latterrade finished from close range on 65 minutes, the kind of try that only arrives when your lineout is humming and your maul is square. Four minutes later, Laloi was in the bin, and the game sprinted away from Agen as Manuel Vareiro and then Caleb Muntz struck against 14 men. You don’t survive that swing on the road.
If the endgame was brutal, the opening told you where Provence were pointing the contest. Two tries for Vincent Giudicelli before the break set the tone: accuracy at the throw, body-height right, and patience in the red zone. That’s not luck; that’s a forward pack getting its timings right. When Adrien Lapegue-Lafaye cut in off his wing just before half, the gap was already out to 22-3 and the shape of it was clear: Provence were clinical, Agen were not.
The oddity is that the numbers don’t read like a 34-point game, which is precisely why the scoreline flatters the margin more than the winner. Agen had more ball and beat far more defenders. Provence missed too many tackles and coughed up plenty of ball. But that’s only half the picture. Provence won the moments that matter: four turnovers to none, a stranglehold on their own ball at set piece, and ruthless conversion once in the 22. Agen did lots between the 10-metre lines and almost nothing where it counts.

Personnel made a difference. Albert Tuisue was the dominant carrier on the field, 18 surges for 89 metres and repeated dents that forced Agen to fold bodies into the tackle zone. That toll paid off later when the maul began to roll. Teimana Harrison cleaned up everything in sight with 17 tackles, which is how you survive a night of scramble. Arthur Coville kept Provence on the front foot, sniping when the guard dog slept and refusing to let rucks die. Out the back, Manuel Vareiro was composed and punchy, chiming in as a second distributor and then arriving on the money for his try. And then there was Caleb Muntz, whose late cameo turned a comfortable win into a runaway: two touches, a clean break from deep and 90-plus metres that emptied the stadium early. Bench impact matters; Provence had it.
Set piece underpinned it. Provence’s lineout delivered clean ball all night for Giudicelli—11 hits—and they didn’t blink when Latterrade came on. Agen’s throw functioned too, but their scrum didn’t. You can live with a 67% scrum at home; away, against a playoff pack, it kills your exits and your composure. Add 12 penalties conceded and a card, and you understand why promising carries led to almost nothing on the board.
There were strands for Agen to cling to. Iban Etcheverry was lively, broke tackles and kept the ball alive with a handful of offloads. Dorian Bellot threatened around the fringes. Laloi’s finish had quality before the mistake that followed. But the lack of a jackal threat—no turnovers won—and the tendency to fling one more pass rather than take the carry-and-clean option meant Provence’s scramble had time to reset. Beating defenders is cosmetic if you don’t win the next ruck.
Context matters here too. Agen took both meetings last season, so this was a line in the sand for Provence as they set out to prove last year wasn’t a high-water mark. The hosts looked like a team that’s learned how to manage a night that isn’t perfect—poor tackle completion, some loose handling—and still win convincingly. That bodes well across a Pro D2 that will punish any softness.
What do they take from it? Provence leave happy but not smug. The finishing and the bench were excellent, the maul looks sharp, and their big men carried like it’s May again. They’ll know they need to tighten up the contact and clean up their defensive entries; 37 missed tackles and 14 turnovers on another night are a problem. Agen fly home with a clear to-do list: fix the scrum, cool the penalty count, and add decision-making in the 22. The shape is there and the athletes are there. The edge is not—yet.
