Bench calm and ruck tempo: Narbonne steal a match Nevers thought they’d managed
This one said that RC Narbonne can live at Pro D2 pace when they trust their ruck speed and their bench. It also said USON Nevers still don’t close. Nevers were the more clinical side for an hour, nursed a lead for most of the night, and got their scoreboard management exactly where they wanted it. And then, with the game state tight and the clock red, Narbonne finally married their volume of possession to accuracy: 79 minutes on the stadium clock, Nael Souid on the ball, and Tom Chauvet slotting the kick that told you something about nerve.
Strip it back and the dynamics are simple. Narbonne generated faster ball and more of it — 54% of their rucks were under three seconds, 99 rucks won to Nevers’ 71 — but for long stretches they turned that into very little. Thibault Santoro’s penalties kept them in touch without denting Nevers’ composure. Nevers had fewer entries to the 22 and made them count, banking around 2.2 points per visit to Narbonne’s 1.3 from 13 forays. It’s why Nevers led for roughly 50 minutes despite seeing less of the right kind of possession.

Where did it actually shift? Belief changed when Caleb Timu surged over on 65 minutes to square it at 19–19. Narbonne had been the side playing at tempo all night — Timu finished with 20 carries and 101 metres — but that moment finally put a punchline on their pressure. It should have been the springboard. Instead Nevers landed the immediate counter: Shaun Reynolds found the chalk at 68 and Anselme Cellier nailed the conversion a minute later to push it back to 21–26. Good teams shut the door there. Nevers didn’t.
They didn’t because Narbonne’s shape hardly changed while their decision-making improved. With Santoro replaced, Chauvet brought a cooler head and a cleaner release, and Narbonne stuck to the plan that had worn Nevers down: clear rucks, front-foot ball, keep asking. When the chance came, it looked like the first minutes all over again — Souid had opened the night on six minutes — but the endgame mattered more. Souid’s 79th-minute finish levelled it and Chauvet’s kick from the edge of pressure was exactly the sort of clutch contribution promoted teams often lack. Narbonne had finally been as clinical as their tempo deserved.
Up to that point Nevers had managed the scoreboard with admirable discipline. Reynolds was relentless off the tee — four penalties plus that late try — and every Narbonne infringement in kickable range felt like three more bricks in the wall. They were smart about taking points and they squeezed plenty from minimal red-zone time. Simon Tarel’s sniping instincts gave them a first-half try and Arno Botha worked hard on the carry to give Reynolds the platform to keep turning the screw. For about an hour, it looked like a classic away-day plan executed.
The problem was what they were inviting while they played it. Thirteen entries conceded to their own 22 is a structural issue, not a bad bounce. Nevers were slow around the breakdown — only 45% of their rucks were quick — and that left them absorbing multi-phase pressure against fresh legs late. Their scramble held until it didn’t. When Narbonne went back to work in the final minutes there was no big system change; Nevers’ legs and spacing just couldn’t keep winning the same pictures. That’s not composure. That’s fatigue and tempo catching you.

Individual detail supports the broader themes. Souid bookended the match with a brace, while Timu was the forward who bent the gain line most consistently. Solomon Alaimalo and Clément Clavières were constant threats in the wide channels, Clavières clocking big metres from the back even if his backfield defence wasn’t perfect. Santoro’s boot mattered until Chauvet’s arrival mattered more. On the other side, Reynolds was Nevers’ heartbeat, Tarel’s spark gave them their one moment of fluency in the first half, and Cellier’s touchline composure after Reynolds’ try looked like it might be the dagger. It wasn’t.
Does the margin flatter Narbonne? Not really. They left points behind all night with a flimsy return from 13 red-zone visits. If anything, the two-point gap flatters Nevers’ approach given how much territory and quick ball they conceded. Narbonne’s set piece held up, their back five got through a mountain of work, and by the end the game was being played at their speed. The finish wasn’t a heist; it was the overdue bill for earlier waste.
Context matters too. Narbonne were coming off a hiding at Dax. This was the response they needed: tempo without panic, and bench composure in a contest refereed firmly by Aurélie Groizeleau. It shows they have a method that scales to this level, even if their conversion in the 22 must improve fast. Nevers, meanwhile, have seen this film too often. Mid-table trends don’t shift if you can’t exit cleanly, speed your ruck, and strangle games when you’ve earned the position to do it.

Takeaways are blunt. Narbonne can build on this if they keep the sub-3s ruck rate high and tidy their final-third detail; the late poise from Chauvet is a useful new card to play. Nevers take home a losing bonus and a headache: their efficiency will win matches, but not enough if they give up this many entries and spend the last 10 minutes defending phase after phase without slowing the ball. Next time they get to 21–26 away with 10 to go, they have to make it boring. Here, they left the door on the latch and Narbonne walked through it.
