Sale’s senior spine treats the Cup like the league — and Bath’s mixed side can’t live with it
This wasn’t a gentle pre-season stretch dressed up as a Cup game. Sale Sharks went full league-mode: internationals in the pack, experience through the spine, and a clear plan to bully field position and finish their chances. Against a Bath Rugby group built for development, that intent told immediately. Fifty on the board wasn’t flash — it was weight of carries, clean exits and an edge at the set piece adding up, over and over.
The story is selection as much as execution. Cup openers are usually for auditions; Sale ran out starters and marquee signings and played to test-match rhythms. They owned the gain line from the first collisions, controlled the lineout, and let Gus Warr and Alex Lozowski steer the tempo. When Bath punched back — and they did enough to reach 28 — Sale reset with accuracy, kicked long, trusted their chase, and squeezed the next error. That’s the difference between a developmental XV and one built to close out Premiership Saturdays.

The turning point arrived before kick-off. Handing debuts to Courtney Lawes, Joe Marchant and Alex Lozowski alongside regulars like Bevan Rodd, Tom Roebuck, Joe Carpenter and Gus Warr set a tone Bath’s young tight five couldn’t disrupt. With Ernst Van Rhyn and Ben Bamber calling traffic and Lawes running the lineout, Sale had repeat platforms. Bath’s engine room of Kieran Verden, Ewan Richards and company battled, but they were defending in retreat too often to stabilise the contest.

Sale’s attack didn’t need to be complicated. Front-foot ball, one more carry to fix the guard, then play to space. Marchant was sharp in the 13 channel, picking lines off Lozowski’s hips and shutting doors defensively when Bath tried to go edge-to-edge. Roebuck and Arron Reed got the sort of early touches wings live on, and Carpenter won the air enough to make Warr’s box-kicking a positive, not a punt-and-hope. The maul, with Lawes bookending and Van Rhyn bolting it, drew penalties and metres; Bath were dragged into discipline trouble around their own 22 and Sale cashed in.
Bath’s 28 speaks to their attitude with ball. Ieuan Davies kept them playing, Ciaran Donaghue hit a few flat passes that challenged Sale’s line speed, and Tyler Offiah found grass on kick returns. Enoch Opoku-Gyamfi carried hard off nine, and Richards picked off lineout ball cleanly enough to launch a couple of tidy sequences. But they spent too long surviving rucks rather than contesting them; when your jackals are a step late, senior sides like Sale rack up lightning-quick ball and you’re folding bodies rather than setting a line. Add a maul resistance that leaked momentum, and conceding 50 was the natural outcome, not a fluke.
Individually, Lawes looked exactly what Sale bought: authority. He tidied the defensive line after Bath breaks and gave Lozowski a reliable launchpad. Rodd had the better of his side of the scrum and was prominent post-contact; Bamber’s work-rate around the corner kept the carry train rolling. Warr’s game management mattered most after Bath scores — the restart chase, the first exit, the next contestable kick — each sequence a small clamp on momentum. For Bath, Richards showed leadership in a green pack, Donaghue kept asking questions even while going backwards, and full-back Jack Woods fielded plenty under pressure without flinching. There’s talent here, but it was learning on the move against seasoned operators.
Does the margin flatter Sale? Not really. Their looseness once the bench traffic started gave Bath room for four tries, which is a clip the Sale coaches won’t love. Some soft shoulders crept in and the spacing out wide wobbled. But that’s picking at edges of a performance built on the fundamentals they wanted to see: set-piece control, breakdown tempo, and calm territorial decisions. The shape didn’t disintegrate when Bath rallied; it just narrowed, slowed, and then kicked them back to halfway again.
For Sale, this was a standards exercise. Treat the Cup like the league, embed new faces into real combinations, and reassert a habit of suffocating teams at the CorpAcq. The price of that approach is expectation — ship 28 at home and you know the video review will sting — but the payoff is rhythm in September. For Bath, the scoreboard is ugly but the purpose of the day wasn’t. Four tries away from home, minutes for a clutch of forwards who’ll be squad men all season, and a hard tutorial in maul defence and contact craft. If they want to genuinely compete in these away Cup games, they’ll need a sturdier spine on the road; if the priority is readiness for the league, this still moves them forward.
In short: Sale picked a Premiership team and played a Premiership game. Bath didn’t, and spent too long solving problems they’re not yet built to solve. Both got exactly what they came for — Sale, authority; Bath, lessons — and both know precisely where to sharpen next.
