Georgia stay perfect with composed win over Samoa
Georgia made it two from two in the World Rugby Nations Cup with a 33-12 win over Samoa at Estadio Sausalito, a result built on Luka Matkava's boot, a stubborn defensive effort and the accuracy Samoa could not quite match.
The numbers told an unusual story. Samoa carried far more often and had more possession, but Georgia were sharper in the moments that mattered and took their chances cleanly. The defeat leaves Samoa third in Pool B, while Georgia sit top of Pool A after backing up their round-one win over Uruguay.
How the match unfolded
Georgia settled quickest. Luka Matkava landed penalties in the 4th and 8th minutes, and even a yellow card for Luka Ivanishvili on 12 minutes did little to disrupt their control. Another Matkava penalty on 24 minutes stretched the lead to 9-0.
Samoa found a reply on 25 minutes when Duncan Paia'aua crossed and AJ Alatimu converted to make it 7-9. That was as close as the hosts would get. Ivanishvili, back on the field, scored on 37 minutes and Matkava added the extras to send Georgia into the break 16-7 ahead. A yellow card for Georgia lock Mikheil Babunashvili right on halftime gave Samoa a window, but they could not make it count.
The spell that settled it
The opening exchanges of the second half went a long way to deciding the contest. Giorgi Kveseladze scored on 46 minutes, Matkava converted, and Georgia led 23-7. Samoa answered almost immediately through replacement hooker Richie Asiata on 49 minutes, but the try went unconverted and the visitors' cushion held firm.
From there Georgia squeezed. Samoa had long spells with the ball but kept giving it back, and the pattern showed up clearly in the numbers: 19 turnovers conceded against Georgia's 10, and eight turnovers won by the visitors to Samoa's three. Aki Seiuli's yellow card on 60 minutes added to the pressure. Matkava's fourth penalty on 76 minutes made it 26-12, and Ilia Spanderashvili finished it late with a try that Tedo Abzhandadze converted.
Standout performers
- Luka Matkava was the difference, finishing with 16 points from four penalties and two conversions, while also making 13 tackles.
- Tornike Jalagonia and Beka Shvangiradze anchored a huge defensive shift with 19 tackles each.
- Mikheil Babunashvili and Luka Ivanishvili both got through heavy defensive work despite their time in the sin bin.
- Davit Niniashvili was Georgia's most dangerous runner, beating 10 defenders and making 58 metres from full-back.
Samoa: plenty of ball, not enough control
Samoa will look back on this with frustration. They made 132 carries to Georgia's 65, beat 30 defenders and enjoyed 61% possession, but too much of that good work was undone by handling errors and discipline. Nineteen turnovers conceded and 13 penalties given away is not the profile of a side in control, and Georgia were content to absorb pressure and counter when chances came.
Peter Umaga-Jensen was Samoa's most productive carrier, running 18 times for 106 metres with two clean breaks. Latrell Smiler Ah-Kiong also stood out at full-back with nine defenders beaten, while Miracle Faiilagi made useful ground from the back row. The go-forward was there. What was missing was the accuracy to turn territory into points.
What it means
Georgia move to nine points and remain unbeaten at the top of Pool A. Samoa, who opened with a win over Hong Kong on July 4, now sit third in Pool B with one win and one loss.
For Georgia, this was another example of how effective they can be without dominating the ball. For Samoa, the fix looks obvious enough: hold possession better, cut down the errors and make pressure count.
