South Africa power past Scotland to stay perfect in the south
South Africa kept their Nations Championship record intact with a 42-28 win over Scotland at Loftus Versfeld, a result that leaves the world champions top of the southern pool on ten points after two rounds. Scotland leave with a losing bonus point and four tries of their own, but on this evidence they lacked the ballast to live with the hosts once the game turned physical.
The scoreline flatters neither side. Scotland were more than competitive for long spells, and the fact they scored 28 points in Pretoria says plenty about their attacking ambition. But every time they got themselves back into the contest, South Africa found another gear through their forwards.
A quick start the Boks needed
South Africa struck early. Embrose Papier darted over on 16 minutes, and two minutes later Evan Roos added a second, both converted by Handré Pollard. At 14-0 inside the opening quarter, it looked as though the hosts might pull away.
Scotland, though, refused to fold. Matt Fagerson finished off a good move on 33 minutes, and Kyle Rowe crossed just before the break, Finn Russell converting both to level things at 14-14 at half-time. For a visiting side that scored 47 in Argentina a week earlier, the belief was clear.
Where the match was won
The second half was where South Africa's power told. Elrigh Louw, on as a replacement, scored on 57 minutes, and Damian Willemse added another two minutes later. Both were converted by Pollard, and suddenly the Boks were 28-14 clear. That burst either side of the hour mark effectively settled the contest.
South Africa then kept the pressure on. Zachary Porthen crossed on 65 minutes to stretch the lead to 35-14, before Scotland hit back through Josh Bayliss and Ben White, both converted by Russell, to cut the gap to 35-28 with a little over ten minutes left.
Any thoughts of a late turnaround ended when Jesse Kriel scored on 77 minutes and Quan Horn added the conversion to restore a 14-point cushion.
Standout performers
The numbers point to a South African pack that made the key dents when it mattered. Scotland's carriers, though, topped several attacking categories, which says plenty about their willingness to play.
- Sione Tuipulotu was Scotland's most effective carrier, with 14 carries for 72 metres, two clean breaks and six defenders beaten.
- Kyle Rowe backed up his try with 54 metres from 11 carries and five defenders beaten from full-back.
- Jack Dempsey put in a heavy shift, with 13 carries and 15 tackles.
- For South Africa, Ruan Nortje led the defensive effort with 19 tackles, while Damian Willemse weighed in with 45 metres, a try and 15 tackles from inside centre.
- Paul de Villiers carried well for 53 metres, while the bench, particularly Elrigh Louw and Porthen, lifted the second-half tempo.
Scotland: plenty to like, not enough control
Scotland will not be too downhearted. They beat more defenders (46 to 21), made more clean breaks (12 to 6) and enjoyed 64% possession. The problem was what they did with it, and how much defending they were forced into elsewhere: South Africa made 199 tackles to Scotland's 126, underlining how often the visitors had the ball.
Ten turnovers conceded hurt, and against a side as good at capitalising as the Boks, that is expensive. Russell pulled the strings with four offloads, and the attacking shape carried real threat, but Scotland could not sustain the pressure needed to keep the hosts honest for a full 80 minutes.
The lineout functioned well at 12 from 13. The issue was less effort than accuracy at key moments, and an inability to stop the game becoming the kind of forward contest South Africa usually relish.
What it means
South Africa remain unbeaten and top of the southern pool, and next face Wales. Scotland drop to third in the northern pool but stay very much in the mix after collecting a bonus point. Their next assignment is against Fiji.
On the balance of play, Scotland showed they can hurt teams with ball in hand. What they lacked here was the control to match it for the full night.
