Bench bite and defensive steel flip the script for Angoulême against Colomiers
This one said more about resilience than structure. Down two men inside 16 minutes and leaking maul tries, Soyaux-Angoulême XV looked set for another long night against a side that has bullied them recently. Instead they ground their way back into it, trusted their carriers, and then let their bench tip the balance when the game went hot.
For Colomiers Rugby, the early shape and red-zone certainty that built a lead simply didn’t survive the second-half squeeze. They lost the contact, then they lost composure. Two yellow cards in 10 minutes turned pressure into panic, and a defence already misses-prone broke open under repeat sets.

Colomiers’ first-quarter success was predictable but effective: clean lineout ball, a disciplined march to the five, and hooker Théo Lachaud finishing twice from close range. With Angoulême’s discipline fraying — yellows for Alexis Levron and Hubert Texier — the visitors controlled tempo and territory. Scrum-half Jules Danglot added a sharp support-line try off phase speed before the break and Thibault Debaes kept the board moving from the tee. That should have been a platform.
But the trendlines were running the other way. Even while trailing, Angoulême were winning the gain line. Giorgi Javakhia and Samuel Nollet kept punching holes, and the returning wave of purple jerseys meant Colomiers were making far too many second efforts in the tackle. On the edges, Kaminieli Rasaku beat ten defenders and forced Colomiers’ backfield to fold in. The scoreboard didn’t yet reflect it. The collisions did.

The match swung on the hour because Angoulême had earned the right for it to swing. The home bench landed hard: Lucas Costa arrived with intent, scored almost immediately, and then popped up again to finish the game’s key sequence. Between those two moments came the crack — yellow cards for Myles Edwards and then Robin Bellemand — the second after Angoulême had stacked phases in the 22 and forced Colomiers into cynical work at the ruck. With a man advantage, Angoulême didn’t chase width. They doubled down on carry and quick ball, Mamoudou Meïté driving over to take the lead before Costa sealed it.
Those tries weren’t accidents of numbers; they were the product of a breakdown battle Angoulême grew to dominate. Nine turnovers won tells its own story. Mathis Lafon and Clément Sentubery both had key jackals that stalled Colomiers’ exit sets, and the home lineout was tidy at 9/9, removing any release valve for the visitors. When Ben Botica came on early and later steered the back third, the kicking decisions sharpened: contestable when the chase was set, deep when Colomiers were stretched, and the late penalty was a neat piece of scoreboard pressure to close it out.
Colomiers will point to moments. They still exited cleanly in patches and their maul stayed a threat, with Lachaud’s throwing largely accurate at 13 hits before the bench took over. Luka Plataret made 20 tackles and Vincent Pinto carried with purpose. But you can’t defend a lead when you’re missing 33 tackles and your midfield is coughing up ball — Martin Dulon alone conceded four turnovers, and Enzo Salles fell off too many in the channel. The yellows weren’t freak occurrences; they were the end point of being repeatedly put on the back foot.
Does the margin flatter the hosts? Not really. Angoulême left points out there — fourteen penalties and two first-half cards is a poor return in any league — and still won by two scores because they owned the last quarter. The possession split, the carry count, and the defenders beaten gap underline how one side’s legs went and the other’s didn’t.
Context matters too. Colomiers had monstered Angoulême in their last two meetings, including a 42–0 pasting in Toulouse. This was a line in the sand at Chanzy: same opponent, very different response under pressure.
Angoulême’s takeaways are clear. The pack has a usable identity: heavy traffic through Nollet and Javakhia, Meïté a genuine dual-threat at set piece and carry, and Rasaku’s footwork as a pressure release. Costa looks like a finisher you can trust. The work-on is discipline; they can’t spot good sides two men and expect to chase every week.
For Colomiers, there’s no mystery. The maul still functions and the 10–12–13 axis can generate shape, but the contact accuracy isn’t there yet and the bench discipline cost them the game. Clean up the tackle technique and the ruck security, or they’ll keep feeding opponents front-foot ball in the last 20 away from home. At this level, that’s the difference between a useful losing bonus and a bus ride wondering how it slipped away.
