Stade Français hang on, USAP rally late — but the real story needs verifying
This one offers a shape more than a settled explanation. We know Stade Français Paris built a huge platform, went to the break miles clear, and then failed to add a point. We know USA Perpignan clawed back almost all of it. Why exactly it finished on a two-point knife edge needs the full match cut and authoritative reports; the immediate data points tell us plenty, but not the whole why.
The verified numbers are blunt. Paris dominated the set piece, won the gain line early, and created far more line breaks. Perpignan’s lineout fell apart and a late first-half yellow invited further damage. The second period swung on territory, discipline and Parisian errors. That’s the contour. Pinning it to a single tactical trigger would be guesswork for now.

If there was a hinge, it sat either side of half-time. Stade had already sliced USAP in phase play and then, with Matteo Le Corvec in the bin on 39 minutes, rammed home one more try before the whistle. That extra seven proved decisive. Without it, Perpignan’s second-half surge draws them level. It’s not romantic to say discipline decided the margin; it’s just what the ledger shows.
Everything before that looked like a familiar Jean-Bouin story. Paris carried 141 times to USAP’s 103, found nine clean breaks to one, and owned 57 percent of the ball. Their scrum was perfect (6/6) and their lineout functional (9/12). Perpignan managed a single successful scrum from two and a ragged 6/11 at the sideline. Front-foot ball and reliable launch zones let Stade run their patterns at speed; Perpignan were either making 150 tackles or jogging back under their posts. Carbonel knocked over all four conversions to keep the board ticking.

Personnel mattered, and again the data aligns with the eye test. Tanginoa Halaifonua set the tone with 17 carries and a try, repeatedly winning the first contact and keeping Paris ahead of the gain line. Noah Nene (86 metres, two clean breaks, five beaten) and Lester Etien (79 metres) forced USAP to fold early and narrow. Leo Barre chimed late and finished one himself. In tight, Pierre-Henri Azagoh hit 17 tackles and the front row gave them a steady menu. The shape was there: lightning off nine, centres direct, backfield joining on front-foot ball.
Then it went away. Paris conceded 16 turnovers to USAP’s eight; a disproportionate share came from their decision-makers and backfield — Carbonel (four), Barre (five), and the bench leaking a couple more. Whether that was Perpignan’s kick pressure, better spacing in the backfield, or just loose hands is exactly the sort of call to park until we’ve got fuller reporting. What is clear is that field position flipped, and with Garbisi and Aucagne taking points when offered, USAP dragged the game back into a two-score contest without needing multi-phase red-zone craft.
Perpignan deserve credit for that composure. Paolo Garbisi steered them into corners and banked two penalties, and when the chance finally came, Théo Forner finished with the kind of pace his 119 metres hinted at. Adrien Warion had already gotten them moving straight after the restart and worked himself into 13 tackles, while Noé Della Schiava got through 19 tackles and kept their defensive line honest. The bench added some punch — Peceli Yato carried with intent — even if the set piece never fully settled. That, ultimately, is what probably cost them the last shot at it: lineout percentages like 55 percent rarely win tight closers away from home.
Does the margin flatter anyone? A two-point game can mislead from both directions. On one hand, Paris’ advantage in clean breaks, possession and the scrum says they were the more complete side for longer; in that sense, USAP’s late cluster of points smooths over a first half where they simply couldn’t get a foothold. On the other, Stade were shut out for 40 minutes at home and coughed up ball in the very zones they’d bossed earlier. You can make a straight-faced case that the narrowness is an indictment of their game management. Both things can be true.
As context, Jean-Bouin has been a bad night out for Perpignan in recent years, and Paris have developed a knack for surviving tight finishes here. That background fits, even if it doesn’t author the specifics of this one.
The takeaway for Stade Français: the attacking shape and set piece are humming early doors, and the strike assets are real. The work-ons are obvious too — decision-making under pressure after the break, a costly turnover count from key hands, and the loss of fluency once changes rolled through. Until we see the clips, calling it fatigue, accuracy, or tactical conservatism is premature; the fix, in any case, is to keep playing on their terms for 80.
For USAP, there’s enough here to say the fight and strike threat will again keep them in games. Forner’s numbers aren’t a mirage, and the back row’s work rate travels. But the lineout has to function and the discipline can’t gift free points on the road. Their preseason concern about conceding too easily wasn’t banished; it was just delayed to minute 41 and beyond. They’ll bank the resilience; they’ll need to bin the rest fast.
We’ll wait on the detailed reports before nailing down the whys. The facts we do have already sketch the answer: Paris built it at the set piece and with clean breaks; Perpignan almost stole it by squeezing territory and mistakes. The yellow on 39 minutes separated them.
