Spain beat Tonga to keep Nations Cup pool hopes alive
Spain came from behind to beat Tonga 32-19 in their Round 2 World Rugby Nations Cup meeting at Clarke Stadium, a result that keeps them firmly in the mix near the top of Pool A while leaving the Pacific islanders with work to do.
This was a smart, controlled performance from Spain. They scored four tries, took their points off the tee when they needed to, and were the more accurate side through the key middle stretch of the match. Tonga had the more eye-catching individual moments, but too often could not turn territory and carries into points.
How the match unfolded
Spain started the sharper of the two sides and led early through a Gonzalo Lopez Bontempo penalty inside the opening 10 minutes. Tonga answered on 21 minutes when Sonatane Takulua darted over, the scrum-half showing the footwork that made him one of the home side's most dangerous runners on the day.
The lead did not last. Tani Bay hit back almost immediately with a try on 24 minutes, and when second row Antonio Suarez crashed over on 32 minutes, both converted by Bontempo, Spain had turned a narrow deficit into a 17-5 half-time advantage.
The passage just before the break mattered. John Tapueluelu was shown a yellow card on 31 minutes, and Spain made the extra man count almost straight away through Suarez's try. Tonga went into the interval having played some decent rugby without much to show for it.
Where the contest slipped away
The third quarter was the period that decided it. Ignacio Pineiro finished off a try on 55 minutes to push Spain further clear at 22-5, and by then the pattern was set. Tonga kept carrying hard but repeatedly gave the ball back, conceding 17 turnovers across the match to Spain's 13, while their penalty count of 10 gave the visitors useful relief.
Tonga did find a response through the bench. Sekope Lopeti-Moli scored on 62 minutes, converted by Patrick Pellegrini, to close it to 22-12. But Spain answered every time it mattered. Replacement Inaki Mateu kicked a penalty on 71 minutes and then scored and converted his own try on 75 minutes to make it 32-12 and put the game out of reach. Taniela Filimone's late try, converted by Pellegrini, gave the scoreline a more respectable look.
Standout performers
- Tani Bay was Spain's most dangerous runner from scrum-half, making 81 metres from five carries with two clean breaks and a try. He gave Spain go-forward and tempo whenever they needed it.
- Antonio Suarez did the heavy lifting up front, topping Spain's tackle count with 17 alongside his first-half try. A big shift from the second row.
- Inaki Mateu came off the bench and finished the job with 10 points, including the decisive late try.
- Alvar Gimeno was excellent in midfield with 60 metres, three defenders beaten and three offloads, keeping Spain moving forward.
Tonga's positives, and what went wrong
There was no shortage of effort or individual quality from Tonga. Otunuku Pauta was outstanding at number eight, leading the carry count with 15 for 75 metres and making 13 tackles. Solomone Kata beat seven defenders from inside centre, and Takulua added 69 metres and two clean breaks from the base. The raw carrying numbers were there.
The problem was control. Tonga could not look after the ball, and their discipline let them down at the wrong moments. Ten penalties conceded and a first-half yellow card handed Spain a platform they did not need. The lineout also creaked at times, returning 9 from 12 throws against Spain's 13 from 14, which made it harder to build pressure from set-piece.
What it means
Spain move to seven points in Pool A, level with Portugal and just behind Georgia, and remain unbeaten with a win and a draw from two. They face USA next. Tonga, who beat Zimbabwe in Round 1, drop to fourth on five points and turn their attention to a meeting with Portugal.
On this evidence, Tonga have the ball-carriers to trouble anyone in the pool. They just need more accuracy and control.
