UBB’s turbo start exposes Racing’s brittle edge – and old scars at Chaban split open again
This told us two things straight away: Union Bordeaux Bègles still have a gear most domestic sides can’t touch when their internationals link, and Racing 92 still don’t recognise what’s coming at Chaban until the dam is in pieces. The home side’s pace and cohesion were there from the first ruck; Racing’s defence, already a question from their summer, had no answers on the edge or in the tackle.
Before anyone mentions cards, note the sequence: Bordeaux had put four tries on the board by 13 minutes, and the scoreboard was running. The red that followed changed the shape of the contest but not its direction. UBB simply played faster, supported harder and hit the gain line with purpose. Racing looked under-prepared and short of strike power; that combination rarely survives a night like this in Bordeaux.

The difference started at nine and ten. Maxime Lucu and Matthieu Jalibert set a tempo Racing never matched, kicking only when the defensive picture demanded it and otherwise keeping the ball alive. Two early scores came from quick reloads: Cameron Woki running hard and tight off shoulders, Tom Willis winning collisions and resetting the ruck in two strides. With front-foot ball, Yoram Moefana and Nicolas Depoortere punched holes that bent Racing’s line so far infield that space bled onto both touchlines.

That’s where Damian Penaud and Louis Bielle-Biarrey feasted. Penaud in particular was unplayable in broken field, slipping tackles and offloading through contact; Bielle-Biarrey finished twice late but his earlier involvements mattered more because they kept Racing retreating. Even when the red card forced a reshuffle – Bordeaux sacrificing a wing to restore the scrum balance and later reversing it – the tempo never dipped. Lucu sniped for the restart try, Toma Taufa rumbled over soon after, and the backs kept asking the same questions in different ways. Racing didn’t find a new answer.
There’s a reason this fixture at Chaban carries baggage for the visitors. Eight months ago the same line cracked after the hour; this time it cracked from the start. Patrice Collazo said back then they’d “lost the thread.” The thread never found Racing’s hands here.
The numbers aren’t flattering; they’re explanatory. Racing missed far too many first-up tackles and fed the penalty count at the worst times. Bordeaux, by contrast, were brutal at the gain line and ruthless out wide. Set piece wasn’t the issue – both sides were clean at scrum and lineout – which underlines the real story: ruck speed and edge defence. UBB’s offloading DNA and support lines forced soft shoulders all evening, while Racing’s transition defence offered little back-field bite without Habosi’s get-out metres.

If there was a hinge moment, it was actually the reaction to the red. Plenty of sides would have throttled back and kicked for corners. Bordeaux doubled down on ball-in-play time. Lucu dictated short, sharp phases to move big Racing bodies laterally, Jalibert picked his moments to square up a defender and put runners through. When the bench arrived, the pattern held. Losing Jalibert on 50 didn’t slow the rhythm; the system outlasted the starters. That’s cohesion.
Individuals mattered within that frame. Willis was immense as the momentum engine – 15 carries with end product, not just numbers. Woki’s brace wasn’t stat-padding; it came from direct, intelligent unders lines that forced Racing’s guards to commit and opened seams elsewhere. Romain Buros picked smart lines back against the grain and punished poor chase lines. And Lucu’s 19 points, including a snipe try, tell only part of his night: he kept Racing guessing at every ruck.
Racing weren’t empty. Seru Uru kept carrying when others sagged and deserved his try, Demba Bamba worked hard in contact, and Selestino Ravutaumada found metres when they finally got ball to width. But these were isolated surges. The defensive cohesion wasn’t there – five missed tackles for Paul Costes on debut told its own story about a new midfield still learning the system – and without Vinaya Habosi there was little one-pass threat to relieve pressure. Add a pre-season that flagged those very issues, and the outcome looks less like shock and more like consequence.
Does the margin flatter UBB? Not really. If anything, two cards and 18 turnovers will annoy them when they review. They still leaked a soft linebreak for Uru’s score and threw a handful of loose offloads. Discipline like that will cost them on tighter nights. But the top-end speed and understanding are intact; Chaban’s snowball is still real, and when they get their internationals on the field together, the red zone conversion feels inevitable.
For Racing, this is a standards game. The set piece held, which is a base. Everything around it – spacing, first-up tackle accuracy, ruck decisions – needs a reset, fast. Collazo has been clear targets are meaningless without behaviours. On this evidence, he’s right. They also need to find transition bite while Habosi sits out, because right now there’s not enough to scare a defence into deeper back-field coverage.
The takeaways are blunt. Bordeaux arrived almost fully loaded and played at a tempo Racing couldn’t live with; that’s their blueprint for the season and it still works. Racing arrived under-done and short of strike power; against this opponent, in this stadium, that’s nowhere near enough.
