Dax ruthless, Narbonne learn the level — but the numbers leave a different kind of question
This didn’t need a glossy play-by-play to make the point. What the night really told us is that US Dax came into Round 1 with a sharp edge and a clean set piece, and RC Narbonne found out quickly how unforgiving Pro D2 is when you can’t turn ball into points. Without a verified, minute-by-minute report to lean on, the outline is still clear enough: Dax were 36–0 to the good by the break and never had to look back.
The why sits in two places. First, the opening quarter: Dax piled on scoreboard pressure early and often, and once Paul Ausset had two inside 12 minutes with Jope Naseara and Louis Couget punching holes, the visiting defence never recovered its shape. Second, the platform: Dax’s scrum and lineout were rock solid, giving them repeat, front-foot ball while Narbonne were forced to build from less certain foundations.

Strip away the noise and the numbers are blunt. Dax won every scrum on their own feed and went 11 from 11 at the lineout; Narbonne managed just five scrums won from nine. Dax broke cleanly nine times to four and beat 27 defenders to 21 despite making fewer carries, which tells you how much more damaging their touches were. The home side also pinched seven turnovers. Narbonne, by contrast, saw a lot of ball — they carried 140 times to Dax’s 103 — but finished the night with 27 missed tackles and little to show for long spells with possession.

There were standouts, and not just on the scoreboard. Jope Naseara changed the geometry of contact all evening: 12 carries, 125 metres, three clean breaks and five offloads is outrageous output for an inside centre. That threat inside dragged defenders around and opened space for Bastien Daguerre to cash in wide of the ruck later in the half. Up front, Ratu Nacika gave Dax a proper gain-line point (10 carries, 61 metres and a try) and Paul Ausset did damage with two early finishes that set the tone. Romuald Seguy didn’t need to be a playmaking auteur — a clean six from six off the tee and 10 tackles underlines how tidy his night was — while the front row of Raphaël Laboille, Louis Barrère and Nephi Leatigaga (and later Paul Laperne and Thibaud Dréan) locked down the set piece that made everything else possible.
Now, about that margin. Forty minutes at 36–0 will always feel brutal, and it was. But the flow wasn’t one-way traffic all night. Dax had to make 153 tackles — double Narbonne’s count — and conceded 14 penalties and 15 turnovers. When they lost Benjamin Puntous to the bin on 62 minutes, Narbonne finally put together back-to-back scores through Chlayton Frans and Baptiste Collet, adding to Clément Clavières’ earlier try. There was bite there once the changes came and the game got loose.
That mini-surge is Narbonne’s foothold for the weeks ahead. Their lineout functioned at 81% and they had carriers who could punch: Faletoi Peni (55 metres) and Hugo Navizet (51) both found grass, and Caleb Timu kept trucking. The issues are where you’d fear for a newly promoted side first up: the scrum didn’t hold, they coughed up turnovers under pressure and they fell off too many tackles on edges. Frans’ yellow on 70 minutes also snuffed out any realistic chase and Dax promptly went 14 on 15 to score through Sam Wasley on 71 minutes, then closed with Paul Laperne at 79.
Does 57–19 flatter Dax? A touch, if you’re measuring by time spent with ball. Not at all if you’re measuring by impact. Dax needed fewer phases to get over the gain line, and when they were in the red zone they finished: nine tries, nine different ways to hurt you, and the nuts-and-bolts of the scrum and lineout never blinked. That second-half wobble when down a man, plus the discipline count, will give them something real to fix before the grind starts in earnest.
For Narbonne, this felt like a blunt introduction rather than a verdict on their season. They were champions at the level below in May, and most promoted sides take a few rounds to calibrate to Pro D2 tempo and physicality. The takeaway here is simple enough: sort the scrum, sharpen the tackle completion, and keep backing the carriers who did make dents. The volume of ball they produced suggests they won’t be starved; the challenge is turning it into points before games run away from them. For Dax, the lesson is shorter: keep that set piece and midfield punch where it is, tidy the penalties, and you’ve got a platform that will travel.
