Montauban’s tempo, Ahmed’s dagger and a last-ditch stand undo Grenoble’s 14–0 head start
This told us more about control than chaos. US Montauban spotted FC Grenoble Rugby 14 points in the opening exchanges and still finished on top because they played quicker around the ball, forced more entries in the red zone and kept their nerve when it mattered. Grenoble, for all their early incision, drifted into slow rucks and cheap penalties at the very moment the game asked for clarity.
The numbers back it up. Montauban’s rucks were sub-three seconds nearly two-thirds of the time, and they were inside the 22 twice as often. That is why a bleak start became pressure, and pressure became points. It was not flashy: it was tempo, field position, and a fly-half who knew which lever to pull.

Grenoble’s fast start looked ideal. Lalomilo Lalomilo punched through early, Otunuku Pauta finished, and Marc Palmier stacked on three penalties to make it 14–0 before Montauban had warmed up. But once Montauban stopped losing collisions at the first contact and sped the recycle, Grenoble’s defensive line had to fold in. That is where the game turned. From that platform, Enzo Hervé ran it like a pro: 10 points off the tee and the kick that mattered most.
The hinge was the passage either side of half-time. Montauban had already clawed back through Josua Vici and a Hervé penalty when they went down to 14. Instead of retreating, they went faster. Hervé looked up, saw space, and dropped a kick onto Stéphane Ahmed’s stride. Try. Conversion. Lead. That it came while a man short said plenty about Montauban’s rhythm and Grenoble’s passivity around the breakdown.
Grenoble’s response was ill-disciplined and costly. With the scoreboard just flipped, Cameron Holt went to the bin and Hervé immediately nudged the gap to six. That was the decisive cushion because Grenoble’s attack lost all early sharpness. The ruck slowed, the shape flattened, and they spent too many phases trucking into set lines rather than asking questions on edges.
Montauban’s attack wasn’t perfect either, but it was purposeful. Vici’s finish came after waves of quick ball had bent the defence; Ahmed’s was born of a 10 who recognised Grenoble’s backfield was shallow and fixed. Around them, the hosts’ carriers kept winning the first metre, which is why the ruck speed split sat 64–47 and why they created 12 red-zone visits to six. If anything, the only frustration for Sapiac will be that their scrum creaked and they didn’t put the game away earlier.
Credit the final act to the men in green too. Grenoble had close to 80% of the ball over the last 10 minutes and only took three points through Thomas Alary on 79 minutes. Montauban’s line held because they stayed square, trusted their inside shoulders and were happy to make Grenoble go one more carry. When the visitors did spill or seal, it was because the jackal pressure arrived on time. The tackle count will flatter Grenoble, not the scoreboard pressure they created.

Individuals carried clear fingerprints. Hervé was the conductor as the game loosened, not just for his 10 points but for understanding when to go to air and when to nudge for territory. Ahmed’s finish at full tilt while a man down was the moment of the night; Vici’s earlier score lit the comeback and kept belief on the field. On the other side, Pauta and Lalomilo supplied the punch that should have set Grenoble up, but once that initial surge faded, decision-making deteriorated. Holt’s yellow was symptomatic of that—late, imprecise, and at the worst possible time.
Does the margin flatter anyone? No. Grenoble led for longer overall, but Montauban controlled the bit that decides matches. Double the entries in the 22 and faster ruck ball earn you the right to win a tight one, and their gritty stand at the death sealed it. If Grenoble had been cleaner in those late possessions, the conversation is different. They weren’t.
What now? For Montauban, this is back-to-back wins to start and a statement about identity at Sapiac: high tempo, smart 10, and enough steel to close. They will sweat the slow start and a yellow that could have hurt them against sharper finishers, but the spine looks settled. Grenoble leave with a losing bonus and a reminder that beating up Aurillac one week doesn’t fix old habits the next. The attack has teeth, but the pack must deliver quicker ball when the game tightens, and discipline at the hinge moments has to improve. Same ingredients, same ceiling, unless those two things change.
