Lineout control and yellow cards: Valence Romans answer Angoulême’s pace with cold-blooded efficiency
This told us something useful about Valence Romans Drôme: when the game turns on control rather than chaos, they look comfortable. Their lineout was close to automatic, their maul produced the sort of returns that win Pro D2 matches, and when the door opened they were ruthless. It also told us something about Soyaux-Angoulême XV: there’s plenty of punch in their backfield and enough clean breaks to worry people, but discipline and conversion in the red zone lag behind the highlights.
Strip away the noise and the hinge is simple. A tight scrap was leaning on kicks when Ben Botica saw yellow on 48 minutes; Valence immediately cashed in with Thomas Roziere, then doubled down through their hooker. From there, Angoulême were chasing with 14, then 15, then 14 again, and Valence kept walking back to the lineout. You don’t give a side this secure on their own throw repeat entries and live to tell it.

Start with the platform. Valence won 23 of 24 lineouts and Dorian Marco-Pena threw 17 of those himself, which tells you two things: the calling was clean and the timing sharper than the defence could handle. The hooker finished with a hat-trick, and while we don’t need a TMO replay to guess where at least two of those were forged, the point is broader: Valence spent their energy creating stable, front-foot ball rather than chasing broken-field contests they were unlikely to win. They had the majority of possession and 107 carries to Angoulême’s 86; the entire evening bent toward their shape.
Angoulême were the opposite kind of threat. They won the clean-break count 8–2, beat more defenders (22–13) and looked lively whenever the ball was unstructured. Kaminieli Rasaku, Nathan Farissier and Paul Berges all clocked big metres. Maxence Lemardelet carried hard off the base. But they kept running into the hard reality of Pro D2 away days: if you don’t turn line breaks into points and you leak cards, you get punished at a ground like Stade Georges-Pompidou. Four Botica penalties kept them interested to the 43rd minute, then his yellow swung the contest away. Later, with Pone Fa’amausili binned on 66 minutes and Adrian Mitu joining him in the book at 76, the door was kicked open again.

Valence’s surge wasn’t flawless. The scrum creaked (six from nine) and 28 missed tackles is a bad number regardless of the scoreboard. Lucas Meret steered things and finished with 14 points including a sharp finish of his own, but he also coughed up five turnovers; wider out, Thomas Zenon was busy but loose. Those are real work-ons, because better sides than Angoulême will turn that defensive slippage into seven-pointers rather than scrappy offloads and lost chances.
Still, the pieces that mattered for the win were clear and repeatable. Marco-Pena’s third try on 55 minutes arrived just after Roziere’s, and you could feel Angoulême’s resistance sag as the maul kept trundling. Meret’s try on 66 arrived with a man up. Sacha Idoumi, on for Marco-Pena, added the final blow in the same window of advantage. Angoulême got over late through Jean-Maurice Decubber and Alexis Levron, but those were consolation scores, not momentum shifters.
Credit Angoulême for sticking at it and for the ambition with ball in hand. Botica’s boot (four penalties) kept the ledger honest, Lemardelet and Clément Sentubéry gave them collisions and offloads, and the back three can hurt teams if the pack gives them steady platforms rather than scraps. But 11 missed tackles, two yellows, and a reliance on three-pointers away from home is a thin way to live against a side that banks five-pointers off set piece.
On individuals, Marco-Pena was the obvious headline, but he had help. Louis Suaud and Ryan McCauley were the quiet glue in defence and air; Roziere’s finish out the back changed the tone just when Angoulême were clinging. For the visitors, Rasaku was the spark they needed more of, and Lemardelet’s 13 carries show there’s a pack willing to work. Botica, though, had a night that summed the team up: useful off the tee, threatening ball in hand, but the yellow and five missed tackles were costly.
Does the margin flatter Valence? Not really. Angoulême’s two late tries keep it respectable, but the decisive spells coincided with cards and with a set piece they couldn’t shut down. On another night, Valence tidy their tackling and this is uglier; on this one, their discipline and lineout were enough.
What next? Valence can lean into this identity. Their lineout is a weapon, their maul is a scoreboard, and with a narrow loss at Brive behind them this answers a question about closing out tight games. They’ll know the scrum and tackle percentage can’t stay where they were and expect top-six chatter, especially with Dax up next. Angoulême take away that their backfield can break games and their loose forwards have punch, but that has to be lashed to field position, cleaner exits and 15 men on the park. Montauban won’t be as forgiving if they hand them the same leverage.
