Bayonne find the speed, flip Toulon, and hang on at Jean-Dauger
This was a reminder that Aviron Bayonnais don’t win at Jean-Dauger by overpowering people; they win by changing the pace. Short on headline names, they found their rhythm after the break, ripped through rucks faster, and turned long spells in the red zone into the points that mattered. Then they lived on nerves for the last five minutes and still got home.
RC Toulon will kick themselves. They had the scoreboard under control through Melvyn Jaminet and struck cleanly once off first phase, but when the game sped up they couldn’t live with the tempo or tidy their discipline, and their own ball slowed to a crawl. Even a late surge only narrowed the margin. Jean-Dauger remains a rotten trip for them.

The turn wasn’t mystical; it was ruck speed and repeat entries. After half-time Bayonne went from ponderous to punchy around the contact. Their 0–3-second ruck rate sat at 53% to Toulon’s 35%, a gap you felt in the stands. That shift unlocked the middle third of the pitch and, crucially, parked Bayonne in the 22 often enough to force the game over. Nine red-zone entries to six tells you who asked more questions, and at 2.6 points per entry the hosts made them count.

The key passage stretched across ten, scrappy minutes when the whole contest loosened. Bayonne’s sustained pressure finally yielded close-range points through Killian Geraci, and Yohan Orabe’s conversion swung the lead their way. Toulon briefly nicked it back via Jaminet from the tee, but the game had already changed temperature. Off the bench, Tevita Tatafu immediately altered the collision point and finished the decisive try after a sharp contribution from Esteban Capilla on the lead-up. When Robert du Preez banged over a late penalty, the gap stretched just enough that even Rayan Rebbadj’s late finish couldn’t steal it.
Toulon did some things well. Their scrum was spotless and their defensive output was huge — 151 tackles, with Teddy Baubigny and Charles Ollivon churning through work, while Zach Mercer gave them go-forward with ball in hand. They also opened Bayonne up early: a crisp strike play saw Mateo Garcia punch the line and Rebbadj finish in the corner, exposing Bayonne’s midfield spacing. That fissure reappeared late and could have sunk the hosts in a one-point finish.
But the visitors hurt themselves in the middle third. A cluster of penalties either side of half-time ceded field position, and once Bayonne were camped, Toulon couldn’t get the ball back without infringing. Then, chasing, their breakdown became gluey — 41% of their rucks dragged to six seconds or more — which neutered multi-phase shapes and left Jaminet’s boot as the only reliable pressure valve. With front-row absences compressing the bench and three forward changes arriving together on 53 minutes, Toulon lacked a closing punch when the contest demanded another lift.
Bayonne’s coaching box will be just as honest about the blemishes. That soft early leak through the line, plus a rash of missed tackles in the backfield, kept a willing but undermanned Toulon interested. The scrum creaked at times and 15 turnovers is a head-shaker for a side that otherwise controlled territory and possession (61%). Still, given they were without Arthur Iturria, Cheikh Tiberghien-Spring and Manu Tuilagi, the bench impact was instructive. Capilla’s skill and offload game gave them variety; Tatafu brought the blunt edge they lacked in the first 40.

Individually, this felt like a leadership day for du Preez. He managed the corners well enough to keep Bayonne playing where they wanted and his 74-minute penalty was ice-cold in context — it forced Toulon to chase seven, not three. Orabe’s two conversions mattered because every point did. Up front, Geraci’s engine and Lucas Martin’s work on the carry and at the throw gave Bayonne a foothold whenever momentum flickered.
As for the wider picture, this result fits the recent pattern here: Bayonne find a way at home, Toulon leave with frustration. It’s not mystique; it’s phases at pace and an ability to squeeze the middle of halves until something gives.
Does the margin flatter anyone? Not really. Toulon’s late try brought it back to what the flow suggested: a one-score match Bayonne largely controlled territorially but never killed off. The hosts had the better chances across the hour; the visitors were accurate enough off the tee to hang around without genuinely threatening once the ruck speed split opened up.
Takeaways are simple. Bayonne roll their home confidence into another season with a clear blueprint: lift the tempo after the break, let the bench change collisions, and make the red-zone time hurt. They’ll need to tighten midfield defence and handle a thin availability list on a short week, but the shape is sound. Toulon leave knowing their structure and set piece travel, their discipline and breakdown speed do not. Fix those, and they’ll turn narrow road losses into wins. Leave them as is, and Jean-Dauger nights like this will keep looking the same.
