Biarritz turn territory into control as Nissa’s rushed return is exposed
Aguilera asked for readiness and only one side arrived with a plan it could execute. Biarritz Olympique settled first, owned the field and kept squeezing until the scoreboard reflected it. The new boys were game but never looked tuned to the pace or the chaos of a Pro D2 opener away from home, and that’s how a contest became a tutorial long before the last quarter.
This looked as much about preparation as talent. Nissa Rugby have been living on paperwork and adrenaline for a month, reinstated to the league on appeal in early August and shoved straight onto the Basque coast in Round 1. They defended for most of the night, coughed ball when they finally earned a foothold and couldn’t stack phases. You can survive one of those; not all three.

The turning point wasn’t a moment so much as an approach. Biarritz banked points whenever they parked in the red zone and that’s why it was effectively done by the hour. They got there through clean exits and contestable kicks, then cashed in with a penalty try off maul pressure, a trademark finish from Mosese Dawai early and again in added time before the break, and a sharp edge from Mathieu Acebes wide out. A final jab from Thomas Dolhagaray on 62 minutes only underlined the gap.
Game management was the difference. Thomas Dolhagaray ran the night, mixing territory with flat touches off first phase, and finished with 14 points and a try. Yann Lesgourgues kept the tempo high around the ruck — three offloads, constant threat on the pick — and the backfield ate metres: Kylian Jaminet carried 18 times for 96 metres and turned loose kicks into front-foot ball; Nicolas Elissondo offered punch and work-rate on both sides of the ball.

Those numbers explain the shape: Biarritz had 60% possession and almost double the carries (170–79). Nissa made 210 tackles. That is survival mode, not a platform. When they did get the ball, the visitors either lost it in contact or fed Biarritz cheap exits: 18 turnovers conceded and 11 penalties kept dragging them back to halfway. You cannot build repeat pressure like that, and their 77% lineout didn’t give them enough clean launches to change it.
The hosts’ pack set the terms without fuss. Sione Vailanu and Andréa Sacco kept denting the gain line, Heath Backhouse added heavy traffic carries, and Adrien Sonzogni hit his marks to the tune of a 93% lineout. No scrum statement was required — both sides were perfect on their own ball — because Biarritz never needed that lever. Nissa’s discipline cracked under that sustained red-zone weight too; the penalty try summed up a maul they couldn’t legally live with. A yellow for Hanru Sirgel only deepened the hole during a period when they were desperate for stability.
There were flickers from the newcomers. Tyler Morgan found grass and beat defenders off limited ball, and Francis Saili carried purposefully in traffic. Jean-Pascal Barraque had moments but spent too much of his night clearing under pressure to change the picture. Their only score came through Inoke Nalaga, who was lively whenever he actually saw a clean touch, but those were exceptions. With exits loose and the ruck messy, every half-chance was smothered before it could become pressure.
Does 36–5 flatter Biarritz? Not really — it reflects control. If anything, they left a couple out there with 13 turnovers of their own and the occasional loose carry when the game had broken. They also switched off once, which gifted Nissa their consolation. But the core looked right: discipline at six penalties, accuracy at set piece, and ruthlessness in the red zone. Dawai’s sharpness in the 13 jersey, Dolhagaray’s calm, and a pack that stayed on task made this feel repeatable, not a one-off home surge.
For Biarritz, the takeaway is that the playoff talk has a base. There’s shape to their attack, a backfield that wins territory, and forwards who don’t need dominance to give their nine and ten clean pictures. Oyonnax away next will stress-test that composure more than a promoted side could, but Round 1 gave them habits to trust.
For Nissa, this was a blunt welcome. The jump from Nationale isn’t just speed; it’s how long you must stay accurate under it. They’ll face fewer nights as long as Aguilera, but the fixes are obvious: exits that land, a tidier cleanout, and a lineout they can lean on to build sequences. They have strike in Morgan and Nalaga; they just need to see the ball for more than one or two phases at a time. Béziers at home will tell us if this was rust and disruption, or a deeper issue with how they want to live in this league.
