Grenoble’s edge without the ball: strike play and stops that mattered
If you only saw the ball, you didn’t see this game. Grenoble had far less of it and still ran away, because their touches counted and their defence bent without breaking in the parts of the field that matter. Aurillac’s volume was striking; Grenoble’s efficiency was decisive.
This opener also reminded us how thin the coverage can be around Pro D2’s Thursday night fare. There wasn’t a full broadcast breakdown to lean on at the whistle, but the numbers are blunt: Grenoblois possession sat at 37% and they made 215 tackles; Aurillac owned 61% of the ball and beat 31 defenders. Yet Grenoble scored eight tries. That’s the story — strike quality versus sheer quantity — and it unfolded in two surges, one early, one late, with a nervy wobble in between.

Penalties
The first surge was ruthless. An early penalty from Marc Palmier steadied things and within a quarter of an hour Grenoble were 24–0 up on three clean finishes: Aurelien Callandret, Baptiste Abescat and a first for Hugo Trouilloud. Nothing cute about it — front-foot ball, hands to width, and Aurillac’s transition defence miles off. Trouilloud, who ended with a hat-trick, carried 15 times for 178 metres and looked dangerous whenever he saw grass. Palmier’s tempo and accuracy off the tee (17 points) made every incursion hurt. By 24 minutes it was 29–0, and by the break 36–12, Aurillac still grasping at a game they’d allowed to gallop away.
Look deeper and Grenoble’s pack set a platform without dominance theatrics. They didn’t see many scrums, but when they did they were steadier — 6/7 to Aurillac’s 1/2 — and they pinched five turnovers while Aurillac managed none. That small edge at the breakdown explains a lot of what came next: Grenoble didn’t need many phases because they either struck clean on first touch or stole ball in messy channels and played off chaos. In the trenches, Antonin Berruyer, Cameron Holt and Manuel Leindekar churned through 60-plus tackles between them; it wasn’t pretty, but it kept the gain-line damage largely away from their own posts for as long as it needed to.

And yet Grenoble invited trouble. Their discipline (13 penalties and a yellow) and 35 missed tackles cracked the door and Aurillac finally walked through it after half-time. Kleo Labarbe sniped on 43 minutes, Ben O’Donnell — 103 metres on nine carries — cut them again, and when Ben Houston finished on 58 minutes the lead had shrunk to three at 36–33. Grenoble were down a prop to the bin in that spell; the scoreboard reflected it.
This is where it turned back. Just as Aurillac had the feel of it, Grenoble’s bench produced the one thing the visitors never found all night: a settling score under pressure. Replacement back-rower Otunuku Pauta finished on 62 minutes, Palmier converted, and 43–33 felt like a gut punch given how hard Aurillac had worked to get within a penalty. From there Grenoble went back to what separated the sides early — accuracy at the end of movements. Trouilloud iced it with his third on 77 minutes and Corentin Peccaud dotted down at the death. The margin ballooned; the pattern didn’t change.
Does 57–33 flatter the hosts? A bit. At 58 minutes this was a three-point game and Aurillac had their tails up. Two late tries stretched it. But it would be missing the point to pretend the gap wasn’t real in the areas that decided it. Grenoble needed one or two clean rucks to break you; Aurillac needed long hauls to earn openings and too often started them 60 metres from the target. When you win the strike race and the jackal race, you can survive a lot of defending.
Individuals mattered. Trouilloud was the difference-maker in backfield; every carry asked a question Aurillac didn’t quite answer. Callandret’s 89 metres and two clean breaks put Grenoble on the front foot in the first quarter, while Eddie Sawailau took tough carries through the seam. Palmier ran the show at 10 — not flawless, but decisive and, crucially, near-perfect off the tee. In the pack, Berruyer’s 23 tackles spoke to how they lived without the ball and still won the collisions that mattered.
For Aurillac, Houston’s output (17 carries, 75 metres, two tries) and O’Donnell’s punch out wide were real threats; Jake Strachan finished well, kicked four from four and beat five defenders. Tedo Abzhandadze offered carry metres from the back, and Labarbe kept asking around the fringes. The problem was structural, not individual — a slow start, a scrum that didn’t give them reliable restarts, no breakdown pilfers to stall Grenoble’s rucks, and a transition defence that conceded 10 clean breaks to a team with only 90 carries. That’s where 33 points still isn’t enough.
What next? Grenoble leave with five points and a clear identity: pace and strike in the back three, a fly-half who turns pressure into points, and a forward group willing to do the ugly volume. They can’t afford another 13-penalty, 35-missed-tackle night against stronger red-zone sides, but they’ll back their finishing against anyone. Aurillac take out of this that they can play — 61% possession and five tries away from home is not nothing — but they need a cleaner first 20, more pressure at the breakdown and better exits to stop giving quick-ball sides the runway they enjoyed here. Solve those, and the volume they generated will start to translate into wins rather than frustration.
