Fast rucks, cold finish: Nissa dismantle Béziers once momentum swung
This was the night Nissa showed they belong back in Pro D2. Not by volume of possession or flamboyance, but by doing the two things that decide tight games and, later, blowouts: get out of the ruck quickly and turn red-zone visits into points. Once they found their rhythm around the breakdown, Béziers’ defence never reset fast enough and the scoreboard ran away.
For 20 minutes it was even, attritional, decided by discipline and exit accuracy. Béziers kicked their nudges, held the middle of the field and led twice. Then Nissa stacked scores in a two-minute burst before the half-hour and the contest flipped. From there, the hosts looked a level sharper at the gain line, and their return inside the 22 was clinical to a ruthless degree.

The first sign came earlier than the tipping point. With Béziers 0–3 up off Thomas Dreuille’s boot, Tyler Morgan finished the kind of sequence Nissa would repeat all evening: clean ball, direct carry, hands to space, seven points. It telegraphed what would hurt the visitors later. The actual turn arrived on 23 minutes when Hugo Sarrasin struck, and Jean-Pascal Barraque backed it up a minute later to push it to 14–6. That two-score punch put Béziers into chase mode. A yellow card to Killian Taofifenua on 37 minutes compounded the pressure and Adrian Motoc muscled over on the buzzer for 21–6. Momentum gone. Game state transformed.
Why did it cascade so quickly? Ruck speed and detail. Nissa’s recycle was markedly quicker — over half their rucks under three seconds to Béziers’ sub-quarter — which meant their carriers were almost constantly on the front foot. Guillaume Rouet set a crisp tempo, Sarrasin and Arthur Vignolles cleared bodies and won races to the floor, and Barraque steered calmly. With that base, they didn’t need big shapes to bend the line; they just kept arriving first. Add a rock-solid set piece — 100% scrum, 88% lineout — and phases started in control and ended with points.

Individuals mattered within that framework. Morgan’s early finish broke Béziers’ initial grip. Motoc’s score on halftime was about heavy traffic done precisely, the kind of close-range moment that rewards clean throws and tight binds. After the break, Julien Farnoux picked a seam off another quick ruck for the bonus-time blow, and the bench drove the knife in: replacement hooker Clément Martinez hit his jumpers, then hit the line twice late to turn a handsome win into a hammering. Even when Nissa were less tidy — the 16 turnovers will irritate them — the speed of their next involvement usually reset the picture.
Béziers’ issues were basic and brutally exposed. Slow ball strangled any multi-phase threat; with only a sliver of their rucks under three seconds, defenders had time to fold and reload. The set piece was a liability: 31% on their own lineout is not survivable away from home, and a 56% scrum return hands over too much oxygen. They defended manfully for long stretches — Thomas Canaleta topped the count and Cam Dodson emptied himself — but 18 penalties and a yellow invited the pressure they were already struggling to absorb. With ball in hand there were flashes — Barnabé Méchentel found grass and Malakai Fekitoa dented carries — yet too often the next touch arrived on the back foot. Half-backs Matthieu Ferret and Charly Malie couldn’t lift the tempo because the platform never arrived.
If you’re looking for flattery in the margin, look at efficiency instead. Entries to the 22 were comparable, but Nissa were averaging around seven points per visit while Béziers were stuck at roughly 1.5. That’s not a late-gloss mirage; it’s a reflection of decision-making and skill under pressure. Yes, the final ten minutes inflated things as Martínez cashed in, but the gap existed because Béziers couldn’t convert and Nissa could, repeatedly.
Context mattered too. This was Nissa’s first Pro D2 home date at Marcel Volot after a turbulent summer and reinstatement on appeal. They rode the occasion without losing their heads — a useful proof after last week’s false start in Biarritz. Béziers, beaten by Oyonnax in Round 1, arrived under a touch of pressure and left with more.

Takeaways are clear. For Nissa: the shape of their game works at this level when the ruck is quick and the set piece sound; the work-on is the start and the looseness — spotting Béziers six points and coughing 16 turnovers won’t always be so kindly punished the other way. For Béziers: fix the fundamentals. A functioning lineout, fewer penalties and faster recycle turn this from a seven-try concession into a scrap. Until then, they’ll be stuck defending long passages and kicking threes while opponents are taking sevens.
