Oyonnax’s edge at home still bites — and Biarritz learned it the hard way
This one told us more about ruthlessness than romance. After both sides opened with wins, US Oyonnax reminded the league that Charles-Mathon remains a harsh examiner: accuracy around the ball, strike threat from deep, and a bench that changes the tempo. Biarritz Olympique had shape and ambition and even a halftime lead, but once they lost a midfielder to a red card early after the break, their defensive resistance thinned and the game ran away from them late.
There was no great mystery about where it turned. The hosts had already reclaimed momentum through the tight five when Phoenix Battye muscled over just after the interval; minutes later Biarritz went down to 14 with Dorian Laborde sent off at 49. In the same window Luka Matkava arrived, kicked two penalties to stretch the scoreboard, then added a try as Oyonnax finished with three in the final ten. Up to 66 minutes it was a three-point game at 28–25. After that, Biarritz ran out of bodies and clean tackles.

Strip the chaos back and the differences were quite simple: Oyonnax won more collisions and more moments. Their carry count and gain-line wins showed in the numbers — they beat 29 defenders and made eight clean breaks — and their edges were fed by tidy distribution and smart backfield running. Alex Newsome was outstanding from full-back, chewing up 122 metres and offloading three times; every counter forced Biarritz to turn and scramble. Lucas Mensa picked his lines, and Enzo Reybier finished when the defence finally slipped. Up front, Battye and Kevin Lebreton were abrasive, and Cyriac Guilly had the timing to cash in when Biarritz’s shape bent.

Biarritz didn’t fold; they were accurate enough for long stretches. The scrum was a genuine platform (six from six) and Luka Begic twice found the line to keep them level in the first half. Edgar Retiere kicked well, picked a couple of seams himself, and they correctly went to the corner to pressure a home side that creaked on its own put-in. When Oyonnax lost Remi Di Pietro to the bin on 63 minutes, Biarritz’s penalty try dragged it back to a one-score game. The problem was what came next: parity in numbers (14-v-14 during that sin-bin window) exposed the difference in red-zone efficiency. Oyonnax scored twice in that period; Biarritz couldn’t build a second entry.
Set piece accuracy hurt the visitors more than the scrum helped them. A 67% lineout return meant spilled platforms and lost field position, and once pressure eased, Oyonnax kicked long and asked their backfield to chase. That’s where Newsome and Reybier changed the geometry. With 29 missed tackles recorded by Biarritz, the defensive workload after the card told; legs didn’t get square, and Oyonnax’s reload speed gave Vasil Lobzhanidze and later Matkava front-foot ball for their runners. You can survive one system error away at Charles-Mathon; three in five minutes and you’ll see the scoreboard sprint past you.
The margin? It flatters Oyonnax a touch because the game was still alive on 70 minutes, but not by much. Clinical finishing late is part of winning here. It’s also familiar. Biarritz’s recent visits have been brutal on the numbers, and this felt closer in performance than in arithmetic only until that final flurry.
Individuals mattered. Battye played like a heartbeat lock — 12 tackles, a clean break and the first shove of the second half. Newsome was the best player on the park. Matkava’s cameo was the sort of bench injection you plan on paper and rarely get quite so cleanly: 15 points, composure off the tee and the tempo to tip defenders onto their heels. Lebreton and Guilly were the nuisance pair at the breakdown, and Vano Karkadze then Feleti Kaitu'u kept the lineout mostly functional at 80% on 17 throws combined. For Biarritz, Begic’s brace and 13 tackles underlined his night, Aston Fortuin worked relentlessly in contact, and Aitor Hourcade hit people and rucks with intent. But Laborde’s red removed a ball-playing fulcrum and exposed their midfield spacing; once stretched, recovery speed wasn’t there.
There are work-ons for the winners. Oyonnax’s scrum at 50% is a worry against better packs, they conceded 13 penalties and handed Biarritz rope for 60 minutes. But the shape is there, the backfield is dangerous, and the bench looks like a weapon. Two rounds in, they look exactly what they wanted to look: hard to live with in the last quarter.
Biarritz leave with something to build on and something they can’t repeat. Keep fifteen on the park and fix the throw — 67% won’t cut it away from home — and their scrum and breakdown effort will travel. The defensive system also needs more bite in the last 20; missed tackles ballooned as soon as Oyonnax accelerated the phase speed. Back in Aguilera, they’ll take points off teams. Here, the lesson stood: if you hand Oyonnax a crack, they don’t need a second invitation.
