Canada hold off Zimbabwe fightback to claim first win
Canada got their first victory of the World Rugby Nations Cup, edging Zimbabwe 23-19 at Princess Auto Stadium in a Round 3 fixture that they controlled for an hour before having to survive a late scare. A 16-0 lead had looked comfortable. It very nearly wasn't.

For a Canada side that had drawn with Spain and been beaten by Portugal in this pool, it was a much-needed result. Zimbabwe, still searching for a first win in the competition, left with a losing bonus point and plenty to build on after three second-half tries dragged them right back into the contest.
How the match unfolded
Canada set the tone through the boot. Peter Nelson landed penalties on 27 and 32 minutes, and just before the break Mason Flesch crossed for the game's first try, converted by Nelson, to make it 13-0 at half-time. Zimbabwe had struggled to build any territory or pressure in that opening period, and the scoreboard reflected a side unable to get going in patches.
The hosts pushed further ahead early in the second half. Nelson kicked another penalty on 52 minutes for 16-0, and the game looked to be settling into a routine home win.
The contest that suddenly reopened
It didn't stay that way. Replacement Liam Larkan scored almost immediately after coming on, and Ian Prior converted to make it 16-7 on 56 minutes. Canada answered through loosehead Calixto Martinez, Nelson adding the extras for 23-7, but Zimbabwe kept coming.
Cleopas Kundiona went over on 69 minutes, Prior converting again, and when Dion Khumalo crossed with a minute left the margin was suddenly down to four. The conversion, needed to threaten a genuine upset, did not come, and Canada saw it out for a 23-19 win. For long spells they had been the better side; by the finish they were hanging on.
Standout performers
- Peter Nelson was Canada's most important player, contributing 13 points with two conversions and three penalties, and steering the side through the tighter moments.
- Sion Parry did the hard yards in defence with a huge 21 tackles, part of a Canadian effort that made 174 tackles in all.
- Noah Flesch was Canada's most dangerous carrier on the wing, making 74 metres from seven carries before his withdrawal.
- For Zimbabwe, flanker Tinotenda Mavesere was the outstanding attacking force, with 13 carries for 51 metres, six defenders beaten and a clean break.

The numbers tell the story of the pattern. Zimbabwe carried more (111 to 85) and beat far more defenders (20 to seven), which explains the pressure they generated late. Canada's 174 tackles point both to their commitment and to how much time they spent without the ball. The visitors' 13 penalties conceded, though, kept undermining that momentum, and they simply left themselves too much to do after the interval.
The losing side
Zimbabwe will take encouragement from the way they finished, but the first half is where this was lost. They failed to trouble the scoreboard for 55 minutes, and by the time their attack found rhythm through Mavesere and centre Kudzai Mashawi, who made 48 metres, the deficit was already 16. The set-piece held up reasonably well, and the bench made a real difference, with Larkan, Kundiona and Khumalo all scoring. On this evidence the pieces are there; the discipline and the slow start were the problem.
What it means
The result lifts Canada to their first win of the pool stage. Zimbabwe remain without a victory but leave with a bonus point after keeping it to four.

Canada will feel they should have closed this out with more comfort. They did enough, and after two matches without a win, that will do for now.
